Hurd's e-mail suggests that students getting the jobs are to be those in the "bottom of the class."
i see this in action every month in court as i watch some fresh-from-lawschool hack bumble his way through a DWI trial in district court. it's bad when the witness (officer) has to lead the prosecutor with extended answers to a stupid questions.

i guess i don't see much harm in this, i mean...this is involving future lawyers.
unqualified lawyer : wet fish ;)

edit: not really in line with the overall topic but fitting with the "rich white kid" theme ......and i find it rather humorous so it's worth a slight thread derailment

I've never heard a rich white kid complain about such things.

Trailer trash on the other hand...
You weren't paying attention when all the rich white conservatives boarded the waahhmbulance about how a girl born to a single mother obviously got everything in life handed to her because she's a minority?

I could have sworn that just happened...

No. I guess I haven't been looking for things to rail against lately...

There ain't no poor black or hispanic kids getting those full ride scholarships on a crappy GPA...
So because the University of Illinois admitted sub-par students with political or professional connections to their law school, the nation-wide practice of granting admission to sub-par students if they're of a particular race no longer exists?
I'm failing to make that connection.

Anyway, the practice of public schools granting admission based on "connections" isn't entirely unheard of. Try getting into the Naval Academy without the right connections. If I recall, you more or less have to be sponsored by a senator or governor to even be considered. Or (in McCain's case at least) your daddy had to be an admiral. Although they do reserve a certain number of seats for minority candidates.
Im not saying it's right, but it certainly isn't something new.

I'm not saying affirmative action doesn't exist. I'm saying that non minority trustafarians should STFU...

As soon as school funding comes out of general funds instead of local property taxes, sure...

Or how about we assign the term "underprivileged" based on school system, zip code or average household income instead of something as disgusting as race?

:stupid:

Socioeconomic status is a better indicator of the students position than race. We can predict how a student will fare in life, with a great degree of accuracy, based on their socioeconomic status as a child....its sad really.

I work at the Oregon Department of Education and we spend a lot of time examining under performing sub groups and ways to increase their achievement.

Here, here. I'm all for that. My $7000 a year in school taxes would thank you.

Base needed help on those that exhibit true need, not social status tags.

I hear there are also black politicians in Chicago: see Jesse Jackson Jr & Roland Burris, two fine outstanding statesmen.

Turn on your Asian reading gene...there was another word in front of black, wasn't there? Something that modifies the noun...and adjective, if you will...

I'm saying is that it is assumed everyone in the story is white. There are lots of black corrupt politicians and I bet Jackson or Burris used his power to help someone out.
