i know this isnt about fitness and nutrition but it pertains to helth so i thought i'd ask.....

do any of you have nightmares. i was having them really bad before school let out last semester and then they went away over x mas break and now they are back again. i am almost positive they are stress related but they are making me go crazy. i feel like a basket case when i wake up in the morning. last night i had one so bad that i had to sleep with the lights on. i am not an easily scared person. does anyone have any hints on helping me sleep through the night. im only 4 weeks into the semster and brain feels fried.

Alcohol and CAFFEENE disrupt REM and leads to restless sleep and nightmares. Eating right before bed does the same thing. I try not to eat anything 2 hours before bed time.

Hmmm, that's not good when stress and school are making you have nightmares.:( I'm sorry to hear you're having trouble.

I don't have any suggestions besides maybe a therapist.

Nightmares are my specialty. I've had so many nightmares for most of my life that I just sleep right through most of them. On occasion it will scare me enough to wake me up. I also have sleep paralysis and mild narcolepsy, so the nightmares kinda come with the territory. If it's real bad and persistant, you might want to see a sleep disorder specialist.

Edit: Lately I've had problems sleeping through the night. I seem to wake up between 3:00 am - 4:00 am for no apparent reason and can't get back to sleep. Yes, I'm exhausted. I actually slept 'till about 5:30 am last night, so I feel a bit more rested today.

Extra spicey food gives me nightmares. When I lived in Lafayette, LA., we'd eat boiled crawfish fixed up extra-spicey, whoa baby! I call em "fight'n the swamp monster" dreams. Stress adds to nightmares but mix in some nice spicey Thai Food and your off to the races! You'll be trying to run away from that ole' swamp monster so hard you'll be down on all four and for extra traction you dig your fingernails into the asphalt.:D

lack of excercise is definitely not the problem, nor am i taking anti inflamatories. i quit drinking caffiene for a couple of months and then had a cup of coffee the other day. that could have something to do with it . so i am off coffee again. dammit. i love that stuff. thank you for the input guys and gals. it is sooo much apreciated.:)

So, you had nightmares at the end of the semester, and then they went away over Xmas. Sounds like school stress to me. I'm assuming that when you started having them it was during exam time? I used to have really bad nightmares when I was in school. Dreams where I was shot at point blank range...real nice when you're a student who doesn't get enough sleep as it is. I found exercise the best thing to combat stress, but I also take stresstabs and extra B vitamins. They seem to really help.

Two suggestions for you. 1) Meditation. Try relaxing your body and mind before you start to sleep. This way your heart rate is lowered and your mind already has its focus on the act of relaxing. This can also help clear other things in your head. ..Zen anyone? I'm serious.
2) While many people may laugh it off , therapy can actually help alot. sometimes we have feelings that we repress and as a result they might come out in our dreams. At any rate, therapy has really helped me out this past year. It might be worth a try and maybe your therapist can offer you other suggestions and advice. I generally lose sleep due to depression and anxiety and therapy along w/ some meditation has helped me cope with this.
