Nikon Beater Lens?

It's a cheap slow consumer lens. Nothing more, nothing less. If you need one, go for it. But make sure that's what you need...
It is cheap for a reason. There is no such thing as a beater lens. What do you think you would be using this lens for? Anything worth shooting is worth shooting well.
Could be to stick on a d40 for the wife or kids...if I had kids I've give them a cheap SLR with a cheap lens and set 'em loose.
I disagree with some of these comments.
The 18-55 is actually pretty sharp and produces good shots. Of course, it's slow-ish to focus and you're stuck with its not-so-large maximum aperture. But optically, the lens is very good for the money.

what i mean by beater lens (isn;t alens i can beat up...) a lens i can use for all types of shooting instead of carrying my super expensive 70-200mm lens...

Because i only use my 70-200mm for sports.... Downhill, DJ's etc......
Anyway.. PICKED Up a 18-55 Lens... great to walk around with a lens that nice and light...
and SMALL!
