I guess nikon still hasnt learned that a built in auto focus motor is important.
Or Nikon realized that a whole lot of customers didn't care and bought the D40 because it was small and easy to use, and most lenses that they want have the motor built in.

I just got a D40 and hardly use the auto focus.
Same w/ my wife. She uses the kit lens and/or the 50mm manual focus lens we have all the time. She pretty much leaves the AF switched off.

Other than the AF-S thing, great camera.

now that i've got a real viewfinder, i can see myself using manual focus (via FTM) at dark gigs a bit more.
That's the one time I really have issues with the manual focus. Of course I switch it to auto in the dark and the ****ing bully blinder goes off, rendering subjects very un-photogenic.

No, the autofocus light. I might be able to turn it off, but I still haven't made a dent in the manual.
The AF assist light always goes on in the dark if AF is switched on. No way to cancel it.

It's not THAT bright though. Unless you are shooting vampire porn in a cave. Then it might seem a bit much.

It is bright enough to make people squint, blink, or otherwise notice me trying to take their pictures unnoticed.

MF then. No AF light, no beeps, just the shutter click after it's too late for them to turn away.

Put your finger over it.

That's what I do with my AF-assist lamp when I don't want it to go off. Camera will struggle for focus, of course, but it usually finds it.

Nothing the D40 can't do. Where did you read this?
Nikonusa.com I did not see the CLS listed as a feature of the d40/d40x. I have only played with a D40 in the store, so maybe its just not listed by nikon's site..? that would seem odd though.

D60:
Nikon Creative Lighting System (CLS):
Flash Color Information Communication supported with built-in flash and CLS-compatible Speedlight
Advanced Wireless Lighting supported with SB-800 or SU-800 as commander
That's the same as the D40. You can do wireless iTTL control of other CLS flashes if you have a SB-800 or SU-800 mounted.

It doesn't have Commander Mode built into the on board flash like other Nikon bodies though.

Well yea, I was refereeing to the CLS capabilities incorporating the on board flash.
