My wife brought up the idea of canceling cable the other day to save some money. (And G-Cracker mentioned he just did this in another thread).

I really don't watch much TV at all, and it's too damn expensive, but I get much relaxation watching Family Guy reruns after a long day at work. Honestly, I'm paying 50 bucks a month for that and the occasional sports (baseball, golf, football).

Anyone canceled cable and missed it dearly, or not at all? Would anyone consider doing it?

We got rid of ours in May. We still watch tv shows on the Internet or off of dvd. It beats the hell out of TV if you ask me. You can avoid adverts for the most part and you can pick which episodes to watch and when. I would like a bigger computer monitor but we have a small living room so we don't have to see far. For the 50 bucks a month you are spending on it, you could own the entire family guy collection and watch whenever you wanted.

I like my tv for the mindless entertainment after a hard day's work. Plus the GF needs her baseball fix, so we'll keep it

I like my HDTV for sports and On Demand movies. I don't watch a ton of TV, but I like having the option there when I want it. A tv is usually on in our house but it's usually for background noise. I'm fairly certain we could survive without the cable service if we had to.

I got rid of my TV (not just cable) years ago.

I did it because I am the type that would sit in front of the TV for hours channel surfing. Pretty often I would stay up until the wee hours watching nothing and then be totally worthless the next day.

Recognizing that I didn't have the will power simply to cut back, I eliminated the TV.

Yeah that's pretty much how I feel, I like having it there. Plus sports in HD is

But on the other hand we're trying to save dough for a house so cutting bills is a smart thing to do these days.

Wait......golf is a sport?? :) We have basic cable since its only $1 more when bundled with our Internet; I voted to dump extended cable under the guise of saving money, but it was really because I hated watching MTV (my wife always had it on)

MTV has failed. Period.

I love playing golf and there is something very relaxing to lounging around on a Sunday afternoon with golf on. I know the majority of people think watching golf is akin to watching grass grow, but I dig it.

I guess you can come over but it's a long drive for TV

MTV has gone downhill. I miss the good ol days of road rules where it was more about the task at and than who was the gay guy. My wife would go nuts without cable. I also like watching house, CSI, Ghosthunters, Discovery, and a couple HGTV show. But due to having two jobs to help finance, at least in part, the tv habit I don't get to watch much. Thank got for DVR.

I miss Last One Standing.

We found we were eating in front of the TV, our brains turning to mush by endless hours of Rock of Love, or any other pathetic reality show, or Flip That House. Really, the shlock that is on TV nowadays (waves cane "in MY day") wasn't worth my $40 BASIC extended. I never really HAD to watch any particular show, but found myself planted there every night... wasted hours, IMO.

We've got a ton of movies, we pat $10/month for Netflix... which we could get any number of TV series if we really wanted it, so no, I don't miss it at all.

I didnt have cable for the first year when I moved out. I would watch movies or tv on dvds every once in a while. But Ill admit, it was nice when I didnt have cable. I got a lot more done and I had time to read.

I enjoy having cable now. And Ill second having sports in HD! I could get along with out it if I had to. But I don't have to. The only time I watch is in the evening before I go to bed.

If it weren't for my kids, I would during the summer. Football/hockey/soccer season would bring me back during the winter though.

At my condo I have basic cable for $16.00 a month - its on about 2 or 3 hours a day, mostly why I am on the internet. At this point its just habit. At my trailer in the woods (where I am at now) I have TV but no cable, FOX comes in clear as a cable and I can sort of get NBC, ABC, CBS & PBS but the clarity is dependent on the weather - better reception when cloudy. :)

I do internet with my air card here - there is no way I could download an entire TV program... 7 minutes of porn is a major time commitment. :)

I think im going to be canceling my hbo and showtime. I really only watch discovery networks and vh1. My cable TV is mainly for background noise or something to help me fall asleep.

I keep hearing that you can reduce your bill by threatening to switch to satellite. This never works with Cablevision, however, because they keep countering with ridiculous excuses for why their service is so much better.

It's funny how I watch TV all day at work and still watch a little when I get home.

I'm not focused on it at work or at home, though. More just a backgound buzz I grew up with and it drives my wife nuts.

Exactly. And I realized that I was paying $40/month for background noise? Cable bill is STILL $60/month due to internet and digital phone.:disgust1: Wouldn't have the phone service either but my house sits in a cell-phone dead signal area that is EXACTLY the size of the house. At least the aliens can't fry my brains with their destruct0-ray.

And I was tired of going outside in my undies to answer my phone....so were the neighbors.

derail off...

I have a cable connection for my computer, but no tv hook-up. We have been tv free for about 3 years. The nicest thing about it is my kids don't constantly want the "next big thing" that tv consistently crams down all the other kids throats.

My fiance' and I have discussed that when we get married, we may go without cable. We haven't decided yet, as we're addicted to LOST, Entourage, and so forth.
