i keep braking the deraillers and hangers on my giant stp 1 so i decided to go ss but i dont have much money right now so i was wodering whether i could make my bike into ss using the 8 speed casette and the stock chainring (j have the tensioner) until i save up some cash. I was also wondering how you shorten the chain properly too. I mostly ride urban assault if its any help. Thank a lot!

yeah i just did that on my cross country bike you just take the cassette off and they come apart mine had little allen screws then you pick the cog you wantand ste is aside go get some more cassete spacers from a bike shop then you just use the spacers to space your cog to were you need it to get a straight chaniline with your middle chainring it sounds harder then it is just make sure your chainline is really close and then put the locknut bakc on and take off your granny ring in the front

First... goto this website http://www.teambigtime.com/software/ssConvert.htm and download the program.

Then read this http://sheldonbrown.com/singlespeed.html and perhaps this http://www.mtbr.com/faq/ssfaq.shtml

I would try to run without the tensioner. You will go through chains faster, but it will be a cheaper and more solid setup(no need for the cheezy singulator). Measure your chainstays, find your gear ratio. Try to use your exsisting big ring. Get some cassette spacers. Get the appropiate Shimano DX BMX cog - a cut up cassette cog with shift ramps is ghetto and derails easy. Sheldon's site should have info on shortening chains.

this probably makes no sense, so ask questions.

FixMeUp I believe has fixed gear info amd you can program it for half-links.

Check your chain before everyride and clean and lube it often. Replace it before it gets too lose.

i just bent 2 derailleurs in one week and i dink i just bent my new one tonight.......arg.... i'm goin singlespeed. I FEEL YOUR PAIN!!!!!!

but i went to my friendly bikeshop ( www.bikeman.com ) and asked them what i'll need to convert to a singlespeed, he showed me a package by Surly that came with two gears and spacers for your freewheel and now i forgot what he told me but i dink u need a singlator or chain tensioner if u have vertical dropouts, cause with horizontal u can just adjust your chain tension by moving the rear wheel.... or am i wrong??

i ride a planet x Bommer on DJ's and Urban :)
