When I roll my bike without touching the pedals (like walking beside it) the pedals are turning by themselves. (Yes, I'm rolling the bike FORWARD.) Is the freehub body shot? It's an LX hub from 1996 with a lot of miles on it, but it still spins great, both in the actual hub part, and the freehub body part.

That happened to me before on my hardtail. I rode anyway. I didn't think it was a big deal... then I was walking my bike out of the woods with a frozen freewheel. I don't know if it was related or not ?

New freehub. The old one was over tightened or wore out. $20 U.S.

Its your freehub. I go through them once every 3 months. The more uphill you do or the more powerful your strokes the more you replace them. They don't last very long on trials bikes either. :)

Don't try riding several bad things can happen. Deraileur flys off and into the spokes is one of the worst. (I got stuck last week on a downhill section 21k into a mountain)

Hey Dude,
A freehub that old could be spent, But if you dribble some oil on the seals of the freehub bodie that will sometimes loosen stuff up inside. another thing is if your hub is from 96, what is it spaced for, a lot of those old hubs are spaced for 7 speed not 8 or 9. That could be a big problem. But save yourself some money and try dribbling the oil on the seals, also itf it gets too dirty back there washing it will help a lot too. best of luck.

I went one month where I replaced it every week. They finally upgraded my hub for free. :)...Being an ex powerlifter / football player I have very strong legs. They are weak parts. :)

Sounds like you need a King hub w/ a steel freehub body Mael. Their engagement is way more durable and positive than a pawl design. Hugi used to have a similar system (star ratchet) but I don't know if they still use it.

It is in consideration. Problem is the money. In canada they are freaking expensive :)

I heard hope had a similar durability as well. I am waiting to destory the hub then I will rebuild the wheelset. :)

Compared to ringdrive/star ratchet, the pawl system is incredibly weak. ringdrive works like a clutch, pulling itself together tighter the more force you put into it. I would keep your peepers peeled for a deal on used hubs as they are easily rebuilt and very durable. I have had my first set of hubs for 5 years and aside from routine service, have had no problems.
