It has finally happened. I have taken the plunge and have equipped myself to foray into the world of DH.

The first few are of my old bike. The next ones are of my new kick-ass mobile.

All I need now is a helmet, armour, and somewhere to ride.

The bike showed up in good shape. The gears a little fawked. I think I even managed to break the shifter when trying to get it up to the biggest cog. Dumbass. The pedals are in alright shape, but I'll have to try them out with the right shoes. They're missing a few studs.

The shock appears to be waaaaaaaaaay too heavily sprung for me. That will be the next step: getting this thing to behave.

I'm now cool. First 1000 posts...now this. Look out. And I didn't even need to defile an equine.

Is there something wrong with you camera? Why do you keep cutting off the tire on the right side of the photo?

Retard
My guess is he is using a point -n-shoot where the viewfinder is offset to one side. So what you see through the view finder is not necessarily what is seen through the lens. As in when looking through the view finder he sees the full bike, but what the lens sees is left of center.

Welcome to the perverted world of DH...Did that bike come from Whistler? I remember the Kona Garbanzo line as being specific to that resort.

If you live on the east coast, you wil have no problem finding a place to ride that thing.

Those bikes are sick. PM me with your spring weight and I might be able to help you out with either a Ti spring or a steel spring.
Cool, but I'm still a little clueless on what spring I'd need on this bike. Not sure which I've got on there now. Will check and get back to ya. Thanks man-o.

MMike owns a few springs. I guess there's a little trial and error involved...

I'd be very surprised if any of them even fit on that shock.
NO no no...I wasn't fishing for free stuff. Just sayin that you mixed and matched a little over the years and this I'll likely have to buy a couple to get it right. Retard. I wouldn't want your crappy springs anyway...

With a little basic math, you can get it right pretty quickly....if you aren't a retard.

(recalling that F=kx, NOT kx^2....) :shakes head sadly:

OK Mr. Mechanical engineer....

U=1/2 kx squared... sor-ry! energy...obviously...

So would the x in the kx be like 80% of the full stroke of the piston? And what would F be? my mass + the bike's X g?

Pffft....when's the last time you laid eyes on a mine?

(And no need to point out that I've worked in electrical systems for the last 7 years)
It has been a while...but there weren't that many springs in the powerhouse either...

I bet MMike posts xrays before you do.

Also, you gonna get a pass with us to bromont next year? And maybe that other place as well if they add more trails?

That race trail RULED.

Dinking around on this thing after I put it together, I discovered taht I can hop it higher than any bike I've ever tried before. I think that's a sign the spring is a little stiff.

Frig. Can't concentrate on work. Want to play with my new toy...

Whoa. Just got a call from my LBS.

I brought my bike in for a tune-up. Asked them to look the bike over and fix up the more obvious stuff like the broken shifter...duh.

This is my 1st bike this sophisticate, and I don't really have the time these days to monkey around with the bike nor the room, nor the tools to really spend an afternoon dinking around with it....Next summer.... So, I brought it to the shop.

Anyhoo,

They call me up and say:
the brakepads need changing: 60 bucks
the chain needs replacing: 40 bucks
the shifter (SRAM X9) : 90 bucks
the rear derailleur (X0) : 230 bucks (FAWK THAT!)

Labour cost is $40/hr. Yikes.

There's no way that derailleur is finished. I've told them not to touch it. Make it work. Looked fine to me and worked alright before I broke (I still don't know how...) the shifter.

But I guess this is just an expensive hobby... Still got a good deal onthe bike, just a slightly less good deal with all these tack ons...

I'll be getting it back saturday....

Oh yeah, I'll likely need new pedals. For a guy who doesn't race, you think it's worth spending on pedals?

Tell that shop to kiss your ass. All you need is an X9 shifter ($60), derrailleur (100), a pc 69(30) chain and 2 pairs of brakepads(40-50).

That bike shop is a bunch of scam artists. You shoudl post the shop name so we can all avoid it.

I can do all of that work for you inside of an hour for a sixpack of newcastle.

Also, I move to the west island this weekend, yeah!

I realise they're not the best... I learned that looooong ago. But there aren't any alternatives that I know within a reasonable distance, and I just wanted to get it up and running.

Once I play around with it a little more, I'll get more into the maintenance...

Newcastle, eh?

Where you moving to? St Anne's?

Ya, moving to Ste Anne on the weekend. Well, starting to anyways. Moving in to one room while renovations finish and I get painting.

New bathroom, new kitchen, refinished hardwood floors, new windows, new electric panel and new oil tank. I think everything has now been spray primed, but i need to get the reast of the nonsense done between now and the 15th when i want to be fully moved in.

I have to shoot a football championship game in ottawa next weekend, so I have to get most of the work done this weekend/week if possible.

The maintenance is easy to do,and simple to show you how to do. Don't stress over their prices, we will get you taken care of. Well I will, I'm guessing your brother will heckle us and throw stuff. :D
