Notchy when tightening cassette?

What's happnin' guys?

I've little experience with the internals of freehubs and hubs in general. These are formula hubs that I would assume have the old style free bearings.

OK, I noticed my cassette had some play in it the other day. Not in the direction of rotation but side to side, as in on the plane of the wheel.

After I acquired the proprietary tool, I started to tighten it and it felt all notchy. It was quite loose and this removed the play. My first thoughts come to the notchiness being from too much compression on the bearings.

Is something else loose in there? Should I disassemble the whole thing to see what's going on or is this normal? I can't find any reference to this on all the fix-it sights like Park's I've found.

It feels good now that it's tight. I would expect it not to spin so good if I had the bearing issues I fear.

Thanks in advance.
Cheers!

I'm guessing you have a shimano cassette. The notchiness you felt is most likely the lockring. It has a corrugated looking lock washer on the back and that is probably what you felt when tightening. You can't affect the hub bearings tightening a cassette.

Thanks so much for the good news. Yeah, it's a Shimano, HG50 to be specific. I should've mentioned that.

I should just tear stuff down and learn I guess, but I'm trying to take a "if it ain't broke don't fix it" attitude.

Cheers

the notches are there to help prevent the lockring from coming loose...... although in your case I guess they didn't help much!

Yep, the lockring feels notchy when tightening so it won't come loose later on..... I was worried about it the first time I worked on one too.
