FORT INDIANTOWN GAP, Pa. A mechanical problem caused a military jet to accidentally drop a 25-pound dummy bomb on a hiking trail a mile from its intended target close enough for a hiker to hear its thud, officials said Tuesday.
The grapefruit-sized, cast-iron bomb left a crater about 6 inches wide when it fell Oct. 13 on a trail along an abandoned rail line in Lebanon County during a training mission for a pair of A-10 Thunderbolts.
At least one hiker heard the bomb drop, but no one was injured.
The accident was caused by a problem in an ejection system, said Lt. Col. Chris Cleaver, spokesman for Fort Indiantown Gap, an 18,000-acre training site managed by the Pennsylvania National Guard.
On Nov. 3, a fighter jet approaching a military range in New Jersey accidentally fired 27 rounds of 20mm ammunition some of which strafed the roof of the Little Egg Harbor Intermediate School. No one was injured. The results of an Air Force inquiry are still under review.
