After getting a UFO-DS with a Rohloff Speedhub this winter, I was spoiled with being able to shift on a fly without pedalling. I got so use to it these past few months that I wanted my DH rig to have the same shifting, so I put my Stab Primo frame for sale and got a Nucleon ST.

Thanks Speedjunkie for hooking me up, and thanks to the rest of the Nicolai team for all your help and advice that you gave me.

Right now the bike is STUPID heavy at 55lbs. I know I have to change the pedals and go for a titanium spring but the bike is still heavy. What is the lightest you ever heard a Nucleon weigh and how was it set up?

Man, that thing looks cool. Lighter pedals, lighter seat, maybe an integrated stem and cutting down the steerer tube, that is all I would cut off that bike, 50 lbs is ok if you can pedal all the time while everyone elses derailer is flapping all over the place!

I think my next bike will have to have the internal drivetrain. I hope the industry moves that way over the next 2 oe 3 years and gives me a few bikes to choose from when i am ready to upgrade to a new bike again.

how heavy are you? whats your riding style?

if you swapped to a boxxer or slider+
lighter seat and seatpost
lighter tires w/ tubeless
lighter cranks and bb (no stupid Ti or carbon)
Ti spring

you could probably be down under 50lbs

edit: and you could also ditch those anvils for pedals

;)

right on man, looks good. I had mine down to about 47bs with a lot of Easton Carbon, a boxxer and 321's with an Avalanche DHS in back. Fun bike. Enjoy it!

I have an Avalanche DHS from my Primo that I have to send in to get revaulved to fit this frame. I'm running tubeless now with Stan's and plan to go with Maxxis Minions. How are those tires?

*ahem*

Quit talking about MY bike like that! If that bike is 47 lbs., I'm jesus christ. Every scale I've placed her on works out right around 52. Of course the air is a little thinner up in Mass. :D

Nice ride man. Hopefully I'll see you at Plattekill this season. Now that we have the same bikes, we should be asking Nicolai for some sponsorship swag for letting people pedal around these fine machines in the parking lot. ;)

I was thinking the same thing. Maybe we can even have an east coast Nicolai team. I'm going to ride my hardest to build up a good resume for next year.

Awesome....

I figure mine will weigh about the same that's why I'm looking at getting a boxxer maybe. I'd run tubeless but financially speaking, might not be possible...we'll see. I can't wait to finish building up mine!!

I like those decals on the seatstays...

I had most of the parts from my hucking Stab Primo. Imagine if I put on the chromo cranks, Brooklyn bars, and Trail Pimps on it. I'll be changing alot of the parts once I get myself out of debt after buy this frame and my UFO.
As for the stickers, I sell the two tone style w/ the outline in a set of three. One large one for the top tube and two smaller ones for any where else, swingarms, helmets, cars, etc. For a single color you get a set of four, two big, two small. Both sets sell for $9.99 +shipping. Sticker sets can be made in any custom size and any color except camo for Nicolai or any other bike company or team.
Here is a pic of the first ones I made in chrome and red but it would look better if the two colors were seperate. I'll change it if it ever gets scratched up. I also made it for the Sherman.

Tires, tubes and spring baby!

Thats about the only thing I can think of different between the bike when I had it light and I sold it. Pretty sure the scale I used was accurate tho, it was expensive at least! hah

I gotta get me one of those digital cameras so I can take pictures of my toys.

Nice setup you have there. One thing you might want to change though is switching to an exteral shift box on the Rohloff. The shift cables are definitely the weak link right now. The first time I took my Nucleon out I dropped my bike on it's left side against a stump about 100 yards into the trail and broke the shift cables. Nothing more annoying than getting a new bike, having everyone ask you how it shifts and having to respond "it doesn't" :(

Putting the external shift box on there eliminates the tensioned cable run. While I was at it I swapped to the Nokon cables (used them on my last Rohloff as well), man what a difference those things make. Shifting is so much crisper now.

Wish I could post pics of mine, just picture yours with a 888, Swinger on the rear, and Nokon cables.

get the Rholoff speedbone...it improves the shifting dramatically....D

The speedbone is the arm that mounts to disc brake tabs and gives the Rohloff something to anchor to on your rear chainstays. I think you're recommending the same part I am, the external shift box, just using the wrong name for it.

Just make sure you don't call up Rohloff and ask for a speedbone or you'll get a little arm that bolts up to your disc brake mounts and is completely useless on a Nucleon.

Any of you guys running 9x3.0 shocks on their STs???

Right now I think most of us have 9x2.75 Romics...I wonder if anyone's done it yet. Of course it would only be Avalanche since no one else offers that size...well maybe Risse.

I'm running a 9.5x3.0" Swinger with no problems. I installed it without the spring first so I could move the bike through it's travel and make sure there were no problems and everything looked good so I installed it.

How did you possibly fit that shock in there?? I measured and I couldn't see how I could fit it. What shock mounts did you put it in? Did you totally throw off the geometry? I'm really interested in seeing how you did it.

Seemed pretty straightforward from my point of view. I removed the Romic 9.0x2.75 that was allready in there, put it on a bike stand and let the rear wheel hang to see what the maximum length shock I could fit in there was. There was just a hair over 9.5" between the widest spaced shock mounting holes so I used those and it works.

Extended as far as it can go the arm swing link that the shock mounts to is limited by hitting the Rohloff mount. With a 9.5" shock in there it's close but doesn't quite hit, I can still slide a business card in there and I see no signs of metal to metal contact.

hm that might not be so tough to cure, or do you not like the idea of the "ghetto" tubeless?

its worked for me for over a year now, cost is absolutely negligible.
