Short CS = moar fun. I'm still considering the extra heft of the Balance over the Patrol/ MT just for the 420mm CS. I had 3 days on an SB5.5, and the extra work to lift the front wheel was not worth it. It was really happy going as fast as possible, though.
Yes but also no. Helps put me at ease that it will be $1000 well spent, but doesn't help because it means I probably have to spend $1000. Should get a large chunk of that back selling my Carbine though, so there's that. Little's worried about weight, but the frame can't be that heavy, right?

I have two different rear shocks depending on where I ride. Boise is pretty mellow terrrain but I travel a lot and have family in Bozeman so the bike gets around. For Boise riding, I have a Monarch rt3 that is 7.88x2 so I preserve geo but have 125ish rear travel. For rough terrain I have a DVO Coil in 7.88x2.25 to get the full 140 in coil goodness. I have an XL running 1750g wheels, some xo cranks, e13 trsr cassette, guide brakes, Pike fork, aggressor 2.35 rear and hr2 front in 2.35, 9point8 170 dropper. Pretty standard build really, weight wise, and with the monarch is 30lbs 5 oz. Its about a pound heavier with the coil DVO. Honestly, feels very reasonable.
I love the two shocks, the bike is so snappy and responsive with the shorter travel air and an amazing terrain gobbler with the coil. So easy to turn and manual, its just a blast to ride. I bought the frame with the dvo and then found the monarch on PB for something like 150 bucks as a takeoff from some guy blinging out his santa cruz hightower. They were all over when I got mine and work great on the Riot/Toir.
It's a super stupid design but the leverage change early on is small so the upswing is very close to being linear. That's still bad but you can counter it by changing an air shock to a regular spring. It really seems like it wasn't designed around an air can which is strange.
