it's sad that laws are needed to replace common sense. if you are going to use your ipod or blackberry, you still need to stay aware.

If it is anything like at my gym when people are listening to music they become oblivious to the world around them, not looking where they are going and making noises they normally wouldn't. It is like they think they are driving. What really gets me are the number of people who seem to think that if they can't hear their farts that no one else can either. :twitch:

such bs. if people are dumb enough to walk into traffic without looking then they deserve the consequences.

how about this... spanking your child in Texas might become illegal and yield a misdemeanor penalty.

You know what? It's either child abuse -or- it's not.

Fvcking religious right govt.

considering NY'ers voted for hillary twice, i'd have to say "HELL YES" to that one.

consider byrd in wv & teddy in ma.
they very much take care of their own.

Out of my mind, back in a moment.

Christ, for once I agree with you.

And why the hell is NY trying to make a law against this? I'm annoyed by the jackholes obliviously listening to their Ipods as much as the next guy, but damnit, this is screwing with natural selection!

empirical data would suggest far more than the next guy.
i agree w/ his archived post you threw up.

and to add: i got a ghey bell on my commuter/XC bike for those very people out waddling in the middle of the trail (wide enough for 2) with either buds or a phone, but that doesn't seem to work. so i ring it twice, give a verbal, then buzz 'em on the left.

but they're still not as annoying as those who walk their puntables on a 8 ft lead crossing the trail.

....or walk against the flow & refuse to move (just a good thing i can pull a decent trackstand)

I tend to agree although I've been known to give my kids the occassional smack. It's definitely unnecessary and I try to not smack them. Don't know if it's something you can or should legislate against though.

hmmm, i guess they must put something in the water in the northeast to make kids obey. or perhaps, parenting is now a co-op with the kids and the adult becomes the friend or guide for the child instead of the mean 'ole enforcer of rules and respect

as Cosby so eloquently states about his kids in reference to their being threatened with a "whoopin" from mom if they don't get in bed, "but daddy, don't you understand? we can't go to be until we've had our whoopin!" :D

how very insightful of you.

if you'd ever met my kids, you'd know they are very respectful w/o having been 'enforced', physically.

I like how people automatically assume there is one correct way to deal with all kids, like they all respond in exactly the same manner.

hey burly...when kizzi has some kids and starts breastfeeding them, revisit yr national geographic post. :D
I dont think I should have kids, but if I do, we'll see what they need in terms of discipline. No way to decide that now.
Anyway, as far as saggy boobs go, that's why god invented silicone.:lighten:

if i follow yr logic, corporal punishment = engaging your kids?
as w/ all free advice on the monkey, ymmv

but if they start their goth phase, understand they may need some motivation to get realigned. alternatively, you could just let them become the next dylan kliebold or eric harris (for daughters it would be cameron diaz or kelly clarkson)

sorry, i wasn't trying to be insultive of your parenting techniques as i have seen children who are just naturally passive and obedient, however, ruling out corporal punishment b/c "your kids didn't need it" is equally as "insightful". as anyone who has ever ridden w/ lil manimal knows....he can ride but he's also got a smart mouth inherited from his daddy and he fully understands the consequence of his actions. it's not done in anger, just simply a consequence of breaking the rules in my house. i rarely have to "engage" (i like that term ;) ) him because usually all it takes it "the look.":twitch:
now my youngest daughter, on the other hand, is impervious to any kind of corporal punishment. she laughs and then runs away only to continue on her toddler crime wave, we have had to find alternative methods with her.
the bottom line: if you can handle your kids w/out corporal punishment than consider yourself blessed, however, don't confuse a smack on the butt for abuse and don't assume that it is a neanderthalistic form of discipline because you may not understand why someone would do that.
*side note: i have met a lot of social workers in my line of work that assume that any form of corporal punishment is abuse, however, of those SW's that share that belief, none of them have kids of their own *
