Raiders cornerback Charles Woodson and safety Marques Anderson were jailed briefly after being arrested early Monday near downtown Oakland for investigation of public drunkenness, police said.

Coach Norv Turner said the team was still gathering information about the incident and did not comment on it directly. He did express regret two of the team's players were caught up in a brush with the law.

``You'd like your guys not to be in that situation,'' Turner said. ``The thing we always talk about on our football team is those hours are when problems turn up, and how you avoid them is by staying out of those situations.''

The two were taken into custody at 4:20 a.m., about 12 hours after the Raiders beat the Tennessee Titans 40-35 Sunday at Network Associates Coliseum.

They spent the next four hours in the city's jail facility before Woodson was released on his own recognizance, which is typical in misdemeanor cases. Anderson had to post $5,000 bail because of an unresolved traffic warrant, said police spokeswoman Officer Danielle Ashford.

``Apparently what happened, an officer in our transportation section was flagged down by a woman, who said the men were in the back of her car and wouldn't get out,'' Ashford said.

In a report, the arresting officer wrote that Woodson and Anderson both had bloodshot, watery eyes, struggled to maintain their balance and had a strong odor of alcohol on their breath.

The two also were characterized as uncooperative and belligerent, according to the police report.

It was unclear whether either of the two knew the woman, whose identity wasn't disclosed. There was no word on when or if charges would be filed.

If there is a conviction, both could be subject to league-mandated rehabilitation treatment and/or sanctions, which typically range from a fine to suspension, under the NFL's substance abuse policy.

Players were given the day off Monday, and neither Woodson nor Anderson was available for comment. Calls to the players' agents were not returned.

Woodson, a four-time Pro Bowl selection who signed a one-year, $8.8 million tender this season as the Raiders' franchise player, did not play Sunday because of a right knee injury.

The Raiders cornerback had a previous encounter with the law. A warrant accusing him of drunken driving and driving with a suspended license was issued in Ann Arbor, Mich., in May 2000. Woodson won the 1997 Heisman Trophy while playing at Michigan.

One month later, Woodson pleaded guilty to a reduced misdemeanor count of driving while impaired.

Last season, Woodson openly feuded with since-fired Raiders coach Bill Callahan. Woodson didn't play in the season finale at San Diego last year after Callahan suspended him for missing curfew.

Turner said he hasn't had any significant issues crop up in his dealings with Woodson.

``You're always going to have some minor things to deal with,'' Turner said. ``We have not had a major situation.''

• The Raiders may be without both of their starting cornerbacks Saturday at Kansas City.

Turner said Woodson's status remains up in the air because of the knee injury. Phillip Buchanon also is questionable because of a bruised tailbone.

``Charles is where he's at with the knee,'' Turner said. ``It's just a matter of how soon the soreness is gone and where he is in terms of being able to play. Phillip, they're going to do some tests. He was very sore. It will be, I'm sure, late in the week before he's able to do much, assuming that everything's all right with his MRI.''

Nnamdi Asomugha and Denard Walker would likely start if Buchanon and Woodson are unable to play.
