Yeah Its pretty stupid , let see the president is going to say "stay in school M'kay , drugs are Bad M'kay " etc etc . Personally I like the idea of it .

however with the GOP gripping about it is not like it is with out Precedence.

She noted that President George H.W. Bush made a similar address to schools in 1991. Like Obama, Bush drew criticism, with Democrats accusing the Republican president of making the event into a campaign commercia

Its just politics as usual.
Politics as usual is a fair assessment, BUT

There is a big difference in crying "campaign stunt" and crying "He's a socialist and is trying to seduce my kids into a socialist world...."

(and, yes, those are actual comments that I've read various places-- "keep your socialism away from my kids" and "The great indoctrination begins, if it were my child and the skrewl they attended, I would pull them that day. To the liberal leftest loons: Stay away from from my kid!" Or how about "I know if I had a kid there I wouldn't want he/she exposed to a Communist. Mine would also be taken from school that day. "

Tin Foil hat anyone?

My answer to those people would be that they should send their little snot factories to private school if they don't like socialism...I wonder how many cans of Milwaukee's Best you need to pay for tuition?

Hitler took power in Germany by espousing social programs and getting the poor and needy to rally behind him. Then turned to the youth to make sure he could brain wash them with his rhetoric. Isn't another world leader trying to socialize government programs, and is now attempting to spread his word to the youth?

Keep in mind, many people suspect that this group is using the words "socialist" and "communist" as a code word for "black person" (or other ethnic slur).

One thing worth noting: look at the list of states boycotting:

Districts in states including Texas, Illinois, Minnesota, Missouri, Virginia, Wisconsin have decided not to show the speech to students.

Gibbs pointed out to reporters Friday morning that two Republican presidents have given speeches to students: Ronald Reagan in 1988 and George H.W. Bush in 1991.

I originally thought Hitler came to power based on nationalistic and racial pride in an era of economic devastation brought about by the punitive actions of foreign governments and financed his takeover with confiscation of property and currency owned by the nation's undesirables (primarily Jews).

I guess I was wrong though, he obviously did it solely through a televised address to the nation's schoolchildren.

Dante, your post was so awesome, I shared it. Here is the overwhelming response:

Kind of like now. Building socialized programs masked by nationalistic pride during an era of economic devastation. "Let's help everyone during this time of need. Don't let people die for lack of medical care." Every emergency room in the country is free. If you can't or wont pay the bill the federal government will pay it for you. All that ... Read Morewithout national socialized healthcare!

Now let's rally the kids behind the cause, and make sure we get them young so they don't know when we are lying to them.
I blame the jews since they are the common theme here.

case in point?

http://www.examiner.com/examiner/x-7814-LA-Church--State-Examiner~y2009m5d1-OC-Student-Wins-Case-Against-ChristianBashing-Teacher

Orange County high school student, Chad Farnan, has won a lawsuit in which the court ruled Friday against a teacher who was shown to often use his classroom to attack Christian thought.
The judge in the case held that Corbett did violate an establishment clause by stating “an unequivocal belief that creationism is ’superstitious nonsense,’” according to a press release from the group defending Farnan. The court went on to hold that Corbett’s statement “constitutes improper disapproval of religion in violation of the Establishment Clause.”

Creationism is superstitious nonsense, all that is left are fundamentalist wackos. Even the Catholic Church endorsed evolution over a ten years ago.

Creationism is not only non-sense that wastes taxpayer money in some public education systems but it could harm life saving research, a fact that has been demonstrated numerous times. Most recently on HIV research. Creationism, like other facets of fundamentalism (Christian or Muslim) only harm humanity.

In six months, evolutions 'just so story' led to new drug targets for new HIV/AIDS therapies, and a brand new avenue of research for immunologists and virologists all over the world (tetherins role in influenza, ebola, EBV, herpes, whoo!!!!).

... But what would have happened in Bizarro World? What would have happened if Intelligent Design Creationists were in charge of the NIH? What if someone like Michael Behe were controlling who got money for research?
Six months ago (well, four months, took him a while) Behe would have thrown everything known about HIV-1 Vpu into the garbage can. My original essay and all of the information it contained was 'pathetic', 'unimpressive', and 'meaningless.' Why would you continue to waste money studying the evolution of HIV-1, when it doesnt evolve in a 'meaningful way'?

This study, this study that discovered a brand new branch of innate immunity, this study that could potentially help us treat all kinds of viral infections, would have never happened in Bizarro World.

What has Behe been doing the past six months? How has he contributed to the HIV research community? The medical community? The scientific community? Its not fair to single Behe out in Bizarro World-- What about Dembski? Wells? West? Am I missing anyone? What have they done in the past six months to help stop AIDS, cancer, influenza, MSRA, anything??

Rather than being an icon for the failure of evolution, HIV-1 is an icon for the complete and utter failure of Creationism.

my point wasn't for or against creationism, just pointing out a modern case where the court sided in favor of separation of church for the right reasons. the creationism comment is just what jogged my memory of hearing on talk radio today.

I dont know that this case necessarily demonstrates a separation of church and state, because you have a legal body protecting a certain religion's factual legitimacy on at least some level. After all, if this teacher had gone on a rant about Leprechauns or Unicorns being nonsense, do you really think the court would be doing anything? Yet they're equally unbelievable, mythical BS.
Not that I necessarily disagree with this particular decision...just something to think about though.

I suppose you'd be in favor of the same judgement if a teacher said that believing that Allah is God and Mohammed is his prophet is superstition?

Remember, Jesus knows when you're lying...

yes, as a matter of fact i would. everyone's right to practice their religion unprovoked is what makes this country great. the establishment clause has recently been used to keep religion out of government and it's nice to see it work the other way as well.

You're confusing the freedom of practice with freedom from criticism, by the way. They aren't the same thing.

how about freedom from persecution and public ridicule in a government setting?

and you must have me pegged wrong if you think i'm the type to openly ridicule someone based on their religion. i may debate philosophical issues but i would never attempt to deny someone their right to peacefully practice their religion. i'd have a hayday debating blatant contradictions with a mormon...if it were an open conversation, not in a government setting(teacher/student, for instance) , but i would never tell them they're stupid for participating in their own faith, as the teacher in this case has done.

As long as you're comfortable with teachers being sued for making non-controversial statements of fact.

I suppose you support taking "Under God" out of the pledge of allegiance now too? Or is that different?
