Barack Obama said:
Obama said in an interview with Philadelphia Sports Radio station WIP 610 Thursday that the point he was making about his grandmother is not that she holds racial animosity, but "she is a typical white person."

"If she sees somebody on the street that she doesn't know, there's a reaction in her that doesn't go away and it comes out in the wrong way," he said.

substitute black w/ white & make mccain say it & tell me what mccain would be called. or put another way, "so what?"

It's starting to unravel.

I suppose the reason to throw mud is to see how a candidate will handle the pressure cuz being PotUS isn't supposed to be easy.

As I said months ago, the Dem and Repub nom will not be that different and either will be FAR superior to Bush... so go ahead and vote third party if that's your preference. (unlike in 2004 where voting third party was evil)

so it's ok for a black guy to generalize about whites? and we all know just how silky smooth obama is when he speaks, so did he really speak in a clumsy manner, or with the utmost candor?

or maybe he's going to remind us that he's half-white, too, so it's ok.

i'm just preemptively pissed at al & jesse for not asking white obama to go on lawrence welk & apologize like the way trent lott did on BET

quote of interest (if link is flooded)
"... .. The point I was making was not that my grandmother harbors any racial animosity. She doesn't. But she is a typical white person who, uh, if she sees somebody on the street that she doesn't know there's a reaction that's been been bred into our experiences that don't go away and that sometimes come out in the wrong way and that's just the nature of race in our society. We have to break through it. ... .." - Senator Barack Obama

Forget what $tink's saying, don't you find Obama's comments offensive?
Sure, but also relatively benign and not without some truth to them. I see it more as his opposition doing their very best to turn one of his strengths into a weakness, Rove styleeee.

It is certainly less offensive or worrisome than Ferraro's remarks, Clinton's history as an attorney, and McCain's new stance on torture.

I agree that there is tension and that we need to address racial issues.

But you don't start the process with "...typical..." In this instance, Obama can go fock himself.

"Typical" is an unfortunate choice of words, but I don't think it would have been incorrect for him to say "many." And if we're playing stinkle's game of substitution, it would have been entirely correct had he left out "white."

unfortunate choice of words, indeed. has he been reading charles murray's bell curve, or taking cues from jimmy the greek?

while the comments may be mostly accurate, there's certainly a double standard here. i would love nothing more than to - in obama's words - "break through it".

i think the best thing for him to do is to lean into the punch & say, "yes, i stand by my personal thoughts, expressed publicly, and we all should have a come to <insert savior here> talk. as president, i'll facilitate it".

we've seen how ignoring this problem has played out, and he sure has a funny way of demonstrating how to unite us racially.

I'm sorry, but that might be okay for you and me, not for PotUS.
Oh yeah, I agree he'll be eaten alive for this one. I just think that it will be by those that couldn't care less about he content of the statement (or even agree) and are merely political opportunists.

That's right, opportunists. The people hating over this race issue I think for the most part are people that were already against him from the start and just waited for something like this (rev.) to happen. Because it was going to at some point. Why can't he favor the black side when it comes to race? I'm really not a history buff but am continuing to learn a little each day. But I don't think the race issue isn't even close to being even when it comes to just plain respect and dignity to the opposite race. He didn't start any of this, he wasn't ranting any racial words to anybody that didn't start it. It's kind of like getting punched in the face and right before you strike back the guy says oh wait I'm sorry, I won't do that again just so you don't hit'um back. And now every time you want to hit him he says no no thats not right or no you can't do that. I know it sounds simple and stupid but I got a pregnant wife yelling at me right now see ya.

Watchin' you. Writing it all down.
I would NEVER speak a word against my grandmothers. While I didn't think less of him for something his preacher said, I do think less of him for saying something like this about his grandmother.

The other point about this is when will the mainstream candidates realize that any generalization regarding race is going to turn out badly for them. It should be rule #1 in the mainstream candidates' handbook.

well john kerry
obama has arab street cred b/c he's black. yeah, like muslims will see a black president & this will undo our unconditional support for israel, will cancel out our global hegemony, will be a sign of a broken dynasty of white men.

he actually thinks muslims as a group are that simple & manipulated. does he not realize those mid-east muslims who decide not to think for themselves get fed during friday prayers, and we're still the great satan, no matter who is prez?

the only way kerry would be correct about obama is accidental, and would have more of an anti-semitic element, stemming (again) from his church: pastor published hamas' manifesto on church website

now that imus is back on the air, will he call for obama to resign? payback's a nappy-headed ho.

That's silly. I love and have endless respect for my grandmother, but I use her (and my grandfather's) behavior as an example often in the same context. They are both Holocaust survivors, yet can't see their own hypocrisy in their discomfort (I wouldn't ever say "hatred") around the darker skinned and even the disabled. To ignore this or pretend it doesn't exist is to stick your head in the sand to the darker side(s) of human nature. That does no one any good.

as were mine.
here's the thing: i completely agree w/ obama, and i don't think this is the nail in the coffin for his campaign. and as i've posted, he needs to put the country on notice that if elected, there will be a lot more honest & necessarily uncomfortable conversations.

the truth be laid bare.

Obama has been great and nearly bulletproof up to this point. While I think he will do a better job than Hillary, I think his decision to address this situation as an an actual "issue" will be his undoing. There are too many traps for him to fall into. Anyway, so once again... I'll be voting for the candidate in the primaries that I dislike the least.

It's a shame that this had to happen. If I were Obama, when he loses to hillary I'd confront that hateful pastor and tell him point blank that he single handedly cost the first black man the election.

Nobody nailed Obama's ass to that pew, as far as I know...not that I think that Wright is saying anything inherently stupider than any other religious figure, but if you really wanted to pick a church for appearances, couldn't you have gone Methodist or Episcopalian?

(Before anyone gets their panties in a knot, I'm not implying that Obama doesn't sincerely believe stupid fairytales. I'm just saying that if you're going to be a politician, try to pick a fairytale factory that doesn't rail on Jews or stick priestly penises into the nether regions of the altar boys...)

No doubt. Obama went to a flamboyant Gospel church with a crazy reverend at the helm. Bad decision for a politician, really bad.

However... you'd think that any smart politically aware reverend would have the common sense to refrain from saying anything about Obama when talking about controversial stuff. And you'd think that he'd absolutely have the foresight to know he should refrain from saying sh!t like "God Damn America". I dont know about you, but that sh!t was ALL over the local news here. I saw or heard Wright say "God damn America" and "Obama" multiple times on different channels.

Whatever he meant by it, truth is McCain won't be able to touch the comment lest a million people bing up his "gook" speech.

I am sure Clinton will have a hayday with it though.

I'd say McCain certianly earned the right to say 'gook' if he wants to.

Just as my great uncle earned the right to say 'Jap' after enduring the Battan Death March and sitting in a Japanese POW camp until the end of the war.

You may be right, but to be sure it was a nail in his political coffin in 2000.

Rev. Jeremiah A. Wright Jr is a F.O.B.

Addressing an annual prayer breakfast at the White House, Mr. Clinton drew on the New Testament, the Yom Kippur liturgy and Ernest Hemingway as he made his most abject confession yet of personal failure, while declaring that he would defend and redeem his Presidency.

‘’I don’t think there is a fancy way to say that I have sinned,'’ he admitted softly, saying that after resisting expressions of contrition he had reached ‘’the rock-bottom truth of where I am.'’

For the first time, Mr. Clinton also asked for forgiveness from Monica S. Lewinsky, on the day that the details of their intimate relationship — details that he had denied and struggled to suppress — poured out through the Internet, whose wonders as a tool of communication he has so often extolled.

that wasn't what cost him the primary at all.
Nope.

One thing I will give polititians is that when you are talking all the time and on the record all the time you will slip up and say something stupid. There is a big difference between slipping and making insensitive remarks and going out of your way to say something stupid like the "Macaca" incident down here in Virginia.

By the same logic a black man who grew up in segregated America...never mind, it's going to go over your head.
