The day I checked out of Penrose St Francis, (the first time) my bill was just north of 760k. IIRC insurance (my employer) paid something short of 300k. The head doc on the rehab floor actually thanked me for having insurance. A large reason these bills are so crazy is hospitals have to cover the cost of the uninsured. Got to make up the loss somewhere. They know these people are never going to be able to pay those bills so the insured person winds up paying 1.75 for an individual aspirin.
