Anyone ever ride down at OBX other than the typical beach bum riding on the side of the road for miles and miles? friday will be my first day down there.

Sorry to derail your thread JZ. I have a friend who recently moved down there and he complains that there is no where to ride so it doesn't look good.

I am amazed at how many people up here have those stickers on their cars. You'd think OBX was the number one tourist destination in the world.
you mean it isn't?

i need help with riding places? any street? i want to have fun not dum dee dum down the center road for 30 miles
There aren't any real riding spots, for the most part all you have is road riding. I stay on Hatteras Island, and most of the people I see are on road bikes and riding between Pea Island and Rodanthe, or from Salvo to Avon.

Take extra chain lube etc. the sand and salt water air is pretty bad for your bikey! (that is just my experience, based on having rust appear within 2 days of arriving at the beach. Not based on some scientific test)

Don't even bother bringing your bike. The main road through OBX is like a highway and the side roads aren't much better. I brought my bike the first year I went to OBX, and never brought it again....

Yep. I took my bike down there a couple of summers ago.
Worst mistake ever.
I rode it one time on a flat 120 degree road with the wind blowing
at tropical storm levels.
Might as well just fart in the sand, and see how much you can move.

Is there any good beer at the outer banks? That's all that really matters.

Hey, is this Weeping Radish joint any good?

http://www.weepingradish.com/

Radishes suck.

RADISH.

I posted this in the wrong thread initially. Shut up, n00bs!!1
Yes!

Weeping Radish is worth it for the beer, but especially so if you like German food. Bonus in Jarvisburg, on the way out of the Banks, they have a 2nd brewery and butcher shop. Refills and fresh brats to go!
The OBX Brewing Station is ok.

(grrr, bring back the old smilies)

I was not that fond of the Weeping radish... We had horrible service, and the beer was only so/so...

"the outerbanks brewing station" on the other hand is pretty nice and good beer to boot! Just look for the large grain silos on the main road at MP 8.5!

jdschall,
As for the skateparks, it depends on where you are staying there is one at the YMCA in (i think) Kitty Hawk, and one in Corolla.

I can not remeber seeing bikes at either one while I was there!

Maybe I don't get out much, but I was amazed with the Brew Thrus (sp?)Basically an old car wash that you drive into and buy booze without getting out of your car-Greatest store ever!

People get all worked up about these things, but they are all over the place in Pittsburgh! Everytime I see someone getting all geeked up about their new "Brew Thru" T-shirt I think how unlucky people are that don't have drivethru's around them are... (I also think the beer selection there sucks unless you like "girls lite")

Don't bother with your bike. I've been there 8 or 9 times now and there's no good place to ride... unless you can find a skatepark as was suggested earlier, but skateparks are everywhere, why go to one when you're traveling? Good road riding, though. All the good urban places are crawling with tourists.

Weeping Radish was awesome. The beer was good and different, the atmosphere was unique and very friendly, and their biggest beer is like holding a pony keg. The food we excellent as well. Definitely a great place to go.

If you like birds, try to visit Pea Island Nature Preserve. It's a nice walk with lots of birds, and you can leave your car in the parking lot, walk across the street, and the beach there is practically deserted all the time.

Rent a couple of jet skis while you're out there. You can take 'em waaay out and have tons of room to play with nobody even remotely close to you. I rented a couple in Salvo with my dad a couple years ago and we had a blast.

Hang gliding on the dunes in Kitty Hawk was also a lot of fun, great way to spend a few hours - especially at this time of year when you're less likely to fry while standing around. The sand is soft and makes for easy landings, and if you're at all coordinated (and not too heavy), you can easily be one of the best fliers in the group - it's fun to see how far you can go while the instructors below you are shouting "flare! flare" and trying to get you to stop :p

Hang gliding. They take you up to the top of the big dunes, and teach you how to get a running start and take off.

Crap, I didn't think they just took folks off the street and pushed them off of a dune, or are they just much easier to fly than I think?
They're much easier to fly than you think, and there are safety precautions taken. You're tethered to the instructors via some long nylon lines, and you only get a max of ~15' or so (maybe 20'?) off the ground anyway - and that's if you're one of the good ones. If the wind is too strong or if you're not particularly athletic, you won't even break 10' and your flights will be short.

Seriously, though, if you're at all coordinated and are even decently athletic, they're easy to fly. As long as you keep it pointed in the right direction, you just run in a straight line and after you hit a certain speed, the hang glider just lifts you up.
