J. J. Abrams conceived of a new monster after he and his son visited a toy store in Japan. He explained, "We saw all these Godzilla toys, and I thought, we need our own monster, and not King Kong, King Kong's adorable. I wanted something that was just insane and intense.

EDIT: warning, spoilers.

The monster is a multi-dimensional beast. At first, they think it's a demon that escaped from hell, but nope.

When it bites a victim, the 'venom' creates a very small dimensional hole. If it bites enough people in a small area, it can rip open a hole big enough to bring over another one of itself.

The heros are like ghostbusters, sorry, best analogy I can come up with, but conventional weapons don't work.

Good idea, but I'd imagine it'll be poor execution.

It's filled somewhat like Blaire Witch, in which I'll be having a seizure form the shaking camera angles and bad lighting. :disgust:

I'll still go see it. I love J.J. Abrams and LOST.

Going to see it in 2 hrs.
Work's slow, so I went to the noon showing.

It was like a mix of the following two movies (highlight to see spoiler): Alien and The Warriors.

My only complaint was the excessive use of the shakey camera technique, ala "Blair Witch".

The movie kicked ass. I wish it had more battle scenes. The special effects and such were awesome. And unlike most movies, I loved the way it ended. It ended the only intelligent way it could, but most directors/producers don't have the balls to do it.

Since some of the trailers describe it as "a place formerly known as..." and describes finding evidence, I'll assume the monster wins this one.

I didn't think it was that great. Definately not bad, but all the hype is really overselling it.

A lot of people were disappointed in the theater. If you're gonna see it, don't go in expecting the greatest thing ever, and you'll have a fun time.

I'm really not expecting much. I rarely go to the theaters for flicks, but I had some time this afternoon and thought 'what the hell'. I used to find myself very disappointed in movies on a regular basis so I don't often hope for much.

I know there's some disappointment, but I gotta say, the limited battle scenes were amazing. Especially the first one.

Makes me look forward even more to the new Star Trek movie since it's also by JJ Adams. Siler from Heroes is Spock :)

Well, I have to say that it was worth my money. I hate movies that rely on loud noises and sudden freak outs to scare people and this wasn't one of them. This one was actually a little disturbing at certain points and I think it captured the cluster****dedness of a situation like that very well.

One that didn't disappoint me was I am legend.

So you say Siler is Spock? Not sure I could buy him in that role since he seems so "evil" in Heros.

He's a good actor and I guarantee that he'll be as good as Leonard Nemoy and better than anyone who's ever played a Vulcan or half-Vulcan.

so what is the monster like ? is the monster man made or like godzilla or something ?
Highlight for spoiler, not just of the monster... The movie doesn't say. It is strictly the view from one camcorder, so there's no info given that isn't seen by the main characters. The monster is pretty cool tho. It's like a human-spider-godzilla-thing. IT has offspring and it's implied that it's bite converts people into one of it.

He can do the whole emotion-free thing pretty well. Quite the advantage playing a Vulcan.

I thought it was great. I'm still amped after seeing the 8pm EST showing of it. I'll take the LordOpie route and hide my spoilers.

I thought the main creature was more non flying batlike in it's movements. The little ones were like those from Tremors III. I also thought it was great use of a 1 hour DV tape, well worth the $ for a 70 minute movie(IMDB says 90, but the credits started rolling 90 minutes after the coming attractions started). Started getting a little nauseous towards the end.

The symphonic music during the ending credits was AWESOME. I just wish I heard what was said after the credits finished. A good 3/4ths of the entire theater stayed though the credits and everyone moaned because they couldn't quite make it out.

Still lots to speculate about.

I watched enjoyed it and stayed after the credits but didn't hear or see anything. I might have no heard it because the whole row of high school students behind us that wouldn't shut up. So if anyone who stayed after and saw or heard something would pm me what they heard or saw that would be great.

I read somewhere else something to the effect that the monster isn't dead.
