I haven't switched to my winter commuter YET. This weekend I'll put my studded tires on the old Racer X and use that to commute. I'm still using my cross bike right now.

My new job is back downtown where parking costs $60 per month so I'm going back to riding my bike to work. I got the bike all setup this morning for commuting/training.

WTF - I use a blinkie light on the back of my bike AND I usually clip one to my backpack. My backpack one broke off last night. Booooooo.

How far is your commute Heidi monster?
It all depends. If I go the most direct route then it's about 4 miles. I like to add more on though so it can get quite lengthy if I go the roundabout way. THat won't happen once it starts getting too snowy though.

Ahh thats good.

I am having motivational issues. I basically ride to the train station in the morning (4.5 miles) then take the train to work. I was riding home from work (21 miles) for a 25 to 26 mile ride.

Now that its colder and darker, I am not really wanting to take the train home because its so damn crowded and hard to get a bike without waiting at least 20 extra minutes for a train that has room.

Yah, that sounds like it would suck. I take the direct route in the winter usually, or just add a tad bit on and take mostly dirt all the way home. You should just move to Bend :)

I haven't ridden jack since my crash in July. Lost vision in one eye, but that's not commuting related so I'll not bore anyone with the details. I would say that sharp sticks in eyes really are bad after all.

This is what I was riding. Old school downtube frictions shifters, freewheel hub, 27" wheel set. Twenty-one miles each way, not too hilly as it's northeast Ohio. I hope I can keep the job if only for the nice ride, and the fact that I can be stinky all day. Again, another story for a different thread.

New place is going to be about 5 miles from the new job. Not to mention it's warm and rideable all year long, as well as more bicycle-friendly, so I'm planning on a lot more two-wheels commutes to work.

Record temps here for the next day or two. :)

Riding home in the dark is a surreal experience. The trail\path that has tons of people on it in the summer is deserted, and dark. Pretty cool.

It's warm here too. I'm still doing short sleeves and shorts for the commute!
Short sleeves and short!!?? :) It has been cold in the mornings in Salem so I do the full wet weather kit. Its been nice riding my bike to work, and it saves me money! :lighten:

I've been lucky since I started commuting again....we haven't had a hard rain yet and its been a month! I'm sure that will change in the coming month. It has been really nice getting some time to relax on the bike on the way to work. I leave early so I can go slow and enjoy the morning...it makes me laugh to see all of the spazzed out drivers floorin it from red light to red light. That is me no more

40mph gusts and the thermometer read 6F this morning for the ride in. At one point my back tire spun on some ice/snow and I swear I was moving backward with the wind in my face.

BRrrrrrr

Interesting ride into day

Everything was ice coated including the roads ,

switched over to my Studded tires , was glad I did , 2 stretches of road were pure ice.

BUt man those tires are heavy ! I paid for that.

i took a week off from bike commuting due to the snow/ice last week in seattle. it really was quite ridiculous. people were sledding down my street day and night. it snowed again last night but i rode in anyway... because i have no other way of getting to the hospital by 5:30 AM. :D was fine, just cold and wet as it is out here.

Dancin' over rocks n' roots!
We have slush here...I refuse to ride in slush.
Our roads have been covered with ice, snow and/or slush since the end of November. Even when the temperatures came up enough for me to consider riding, the roads were awful! I'm not nearly has hardcore as Splat  and 15 miles from my sitter in low temps on these crappy roads isn't going to happen for me right now.

We've been having unusually dry, and very cold, weather. I actually like it, better to have 30 and dry than 38 and rain :) Riding to work everyday I notice how big of d!cks everyone is on their drive to work....it amazes me daily. I love the people who floor it in between red lights and then slam the brake on. I kinda liked $4 gas, at least people drove reasonable

If I do the full commute its 26 miles, and its dark and butt cold in the evening. If I do the Train connections, its about nine miles, but the train home at night is soooo farking crowded that i have to wait sometimes 30 extra minutes to catch one I can fit in.
