"To me politics are about fighting for what you believe is right," he said. "I've always done that on the bike, on a purely sporting level, but also on another level."

Uh.... what bike related moral issues did he solve exactly?

He's a freakin athlete. A great one. Incredible spirit and all that. But he's still JUST and athlete. Why can't he just leave it at that? How is he in the LEAST bit qualified to even consider this??

Even though the media's saying that, I think it's BS. What's the deal with "I used my bike to fight for what's right." Sounds like Lance is taking himself WAY too seriously. He still kicks ass, though. And how hard could it be to run Texas?

A drunk draft dodger from Texas with a cocaine problem went pretty far. Lance is starting light years beyond him.

Career politicians are better? I say elect people with real world experiences rather than a bunch of spoiled brats that have never worked a day in their lives. Who exactly do you think SHOULD be in politics??

Lance said it's not in his plans, but he wouldn't count it out. Just to leave options open. They are right about W, except he is not a Texan. Get that straight.

I know he's a yankee in cowboy clothing but he doesn't. He claims to be a Texan, was the governor of Tejas, and bad things happen to people that contradict him.

Imagine the cycling advocacy if he became President of the United States? I'd vote for him on that alone. I'd rather have safer roads than troops in Iraq.

Amen to that. Imagine what the 200 billion or so we've pumped into Iraq could have done for the health and fitness of America, Imagine the cycling....

The idea of democracy was originally to have the everyday man (land owning) take offices and run the gov not professional politicians. Unfortunately today this means people wealthy enough to fund their own campaigns or famous enough for widespread name recognition.

President Bush was born on July 6, 1946, in New Haven, Connecticut, and grew up in Midland and Houston, Texas. He received a bachelor’s degree in history from Yale University in 1968, and then served as an F-102 fighter pilot in the Texas Air National Guard. President Bush received a Master of Business Administration from Harvard Business School in 1975. Following graduation, he moved back to Midland and began a career in the energy business. After working on his father’s successful 1988 Presidential campaign, President Bush assembled the group of partners who purchased the Texas Rangers baseball franchise in 1989. On November 8, 1994, President Bush was elected Governor of Texas. He became the first Governor in Texas history to be elected to consecutive 4-year terms when he was re-elected on November 3, 1998.

nope - he is not in our cult

Those schools must not teach crap, and he never grew up.

Wow He's more Texan than I thought. According to to your quote the only time he wasn't in Texas was for college, and a short period after being spawned.

Just because he can ride a bike really fast for a really long time doesn't mean he has a brain in his head.

He's not a hero.
Have you heard interviews? I don't really know the guy, but from the little I've seen, his diplomacy towards other current and past racers far exceeds the current PotUS's ability to express himself 'professionally'.

I'm not trying to get this moved to the politically forum, but basically, our (the USA) level of expectation from our leader has dropped to a level once thought impossible. First BJs in the White House and lies abound, then a guy who can't remember cliches or read a teleprompter.

Frankly that statement could apply to 50% of the population.

I just think people have lost sight of what is important. Lance has developed cold fusion, or ended slavery or fed the hungry.

While his accomplishment is huge, it has nothing to do with being a leader. (And I guess it hould be stated that "elected office" doesn't necessarily mean he's eyeballing the governor's mansion. If he ends up mayor of some little town, well good for him)

But speaking of the gov of Cali, remember the circu that became? Porn stars were running. The whole thing was a joke. The whole idea of politics has become a publicity stunt.

Anyhoo....it just irks me if Lance is actually serious about this. I don't see how a pro athlete can possibly have "the people's" best interest at heart. (But maybe that's another thread unto itself)

Wow, Lance has done a lot! I'm assuming you wanted to say "hasn't"

If you substitute "George W. Bush" for "Lance", and change "has" to "hasn't" in your statement it's still true. In fact W. was a failed business man, a bad team owner, draft dodger, and a drunken coke head.

Under your criteria no one who is currently in politics belongs there. An while that's probably true, it doesn't make Lance any less qualified than the clowns he have in office now. Lance has at least accomplished something positive in his life, he's succeded at something. If you ignore bike racing, you can't ignore the livestrong foundation.

That's what is great about this Country is that Lance has the opportunity to try politics if he so cares, and WE as Voters have the final say for him to succeed.

Heh heh....Lance could run for Governor, Senator or Congressman in Texas TODAY and he'd win. :D The only thing that would stop him is if there is some kind of age minimum.

hahaha, that brings up a funny point.

although I'm not sure of Changleen's mountain biking skills, the last time i saw Lance ride a mountain bike in an XC race, as soon as the singletrack section turned REMOTELY technical, he was bouncing back and forth across the trail like a ping pong ball and hitting the ground as fast as he could get back up.

don't get me wrong,he EMBARASSED the rest of the world class field from the very start all the way up the first climb, but there was no way in hell he could come back to the lead after they reached the singletrack decents.

he should stick to road bikes.

He would never get elected, unless he has a very high profile born again Jesus moment. Too much stuff in his books about not being cool with JC, y'know...

With a little bit of trail time, he would absolutely be wasting NORBA and World Cup races.
