Oil height tech help!

I figured what the heck:D

Ok, so I just got my new '05 Z1 FR I and the oil height chart says, for my weight, 125cc in the right leg and 140cc in the left leg.

So... what the heck is that in length from the top cap? I've heard numerous people complain about oil levels not being correct out of the box. I'd like to "top it off" before I get my first ride on it but I don't want to have to dump out all the fresh oil that's already in there.

And of course, this year it seems Marzocchi doesn't want anyone working on their forks. No disassembly instructions and the following note on their website:

WARNING: fork oil levels must be adjusted only by Marzocchi Authorized Service Centers.

Anybody with some insight?

I'm sure Vinton has a full Marz service center to help you out. :eviltongu
LOL! Actually, I went to THREE local shops (only 4 major ones on the Westside) yesterday and NONE of them had Marzocchi oil, or even FORK oil for that matter!

I still have to check with the other shop but after the fiasco with them using a jagged pipe to "gently" remove some headset spacers (gouging the crap out of them), I don't even want those guys coming near my fork with a ten-foot dipstick!

On the older Z1 i have i just measure out 45-50mm of length on a clear type zip tie and scribe a mark.
I use that to measure the freespace as opposed measuring the actual oil volume.
I just slowly dip the zip tie down until i either reach oil or don't.
Add oil to measure on the zip tie or remove carefully(syringe is best) for desired oil levels.
I drove through Vinton B4.
Better you than me brother!

Why don't you just wait and see if you can get full travel without bottoming and add or subtract oil from there. I've found that I need slightly more oil than marzocchi reccomends anyway and I'm a light weight. Sure the numbers are nice to get you in the ball park but to really tune the fork trial and error is the only way to get it right.

korn has the right answer for you.
But you can try 65mm for starters, unless it is a new 05-150mm one, which i am not sure of.(65mm compared to 45mm of the older 30mm leg version.)
or you can just put in 10cc's now since they tend to run low out of the box.

True, but while I was pseudo-testing the fork on my living room rug, the ETA didn't seem like it was kicking in at all. Last time this happened to me, I didn't have enough oil in the legs.

Also, I recieved a reply from Marzhocchi Tech saying the fork was tuned out-of-the-box for riders that are 160-185 lbs. The oil level table puts me at the edge of the stock setup, so I'm probably going to need more oil regardless.

I know that I should probably wait to test it out first, but I'm still waiting for my bike to arrive. *cough* Mr. leprechaun *cough*

So I figure I'll try and get everything else ready so I'll be ready to go once it arrives. *cough* hopefully soon *cough* :sneaky:

I'll let you in on a little secret, marzocchi "fork oil" is motorcycle oil, available at any MX shop. Names like Silkone, Golden Spectro, Yamaha Fork oil, Bel-Ray, Maxima, etc....

Um, thanks for the tip. Although... trying to find an MX shop on the westside of El Paso is like, well, trying to find an MX shop on the westside of El Paso... and finding 7.5 weight at that.

The best I was able to do last time for my '02 Z1 was a bottle of Nempco Twin Power fork oil from "Bikers and Babes" on N. Mesa. I certainly didn't see any "babes" there. The oil was a sweet red color, though :D

Does UPS know where to find the westside of El Paso?
Actually, that can be a challenge at well.

Technically, I live in Vinton, TX AND Anthony TX. Both are supposed to be correct according to the USPS office. Also, most of my mail arrives under the zip code 79821, however I also get mail under 88021. Anthony used to be completely under the jurisdiction of New Mexico (where the zip code was 88021), then Texas decided they wanted in on the action and got 79821.

Plus my street address technically belongs to 3 parties. My family, my brother-in-law, and my father-in-law’s business. Most packages just get delivered to the shop, under the business’s name. At the same time, though, the street address no. is never consistent. 8225, 8225A, and even 7398 are valid numbers to get something delivered to our home.

Are you confused yet? Welcome to Vinton! (or Anthony)

I don't know their names, but my wife has some relatives that are certifiably(sp) insane. They live in Anthony. Maybe they are mad that they can't find their house.

Holy cow, the post office doesn't know what your address is and you're wondering when they'll deliver your frame? It sounds like you could be in for a long wait.
