Oil volume for a FOX TALAS

The manual which came with my fork was tthe standard vanila, float manual and Fox sent me an addendum for the Talas. All the addendum said was that the TALAS system needs no maintenance for about 18 months and you need special pumps to pressurize it so don't take off the top cap on that side. Other than that it would appear then that it takes 30cc in the left, air side and 160cc in the right damper side.

Since the fork was in its 6th month of mostly very wet weather use I decided it would be wise to change the oil. Turns out the oil looked new. Clear and clean after probably 150 hours of 95% off road use is damn good in my books. And there is only the top wiper/seal and foam ring to seal out the elements.

Anyway, I think 160cc's is too much as I had hydraulic lockout after I added the oil in. With no air and compressing the fork the right seal popped up and belched oil on my toes when the fork still had 3 or 4 cm to go to full compression. I've bled out a bunch of oil until it feels right but what is the proper oil volume?

Andy,
The proper oil volume is 160cc. Usually when doing a oil change it's a good idea to put a little less than that because as you said some oil will remain in the damper. Remove about 5cc at a time until you get the fork to perform properly.

Thank you,
Jeromy

This response came in less than 2 minutes. Gotta like that eh! This fork just gets better all the time as I get the tuning dialed to my preferences. As things dry up and we ride faster, I notice how well this fork works even more when compared to the Psylo Race it replaced. And I liked the Psylo too, it was just getting a little long in the tooth.

Just curious if anyone who rides a talas has actually measured the travel they're getting. On mine, in 125mm mode (4.92 inches truly) , I'm actually getting about 4.6 inches travel. (I took out all the air so I could bottom her and this was the measurement I got. The stanchion's themselves are about 5' exposed fully when full extended, but when fully compressed, there was still about 3/8" exposed. Would anyone think that the oil height/volume is causing premature bottoming, hindering the full 4.92 inches of supposed travel? Just looking for ideas...thanks.

That's my next question for Fox. When they were new and bottomed out, the wiper went right up to the crown. Now on bottom out it stops about 2cm short of the crown even with no air in it and the wipers popped up.
