so this weekend, my girlfriend and i watched our future new kitten. we kept her in my room because there are 2 other cats in this apartment. all was going pretty well. the first night, rather than use her little box, she used a towel i had on the bathroom floor (serving as my bathroom rug). fine with me...better than doing it on the carpet. the second night, however...

she used my bed. pee and poo. and did a damn good job of hiding it 'cause it took me until 3pm to find it. i was able to get the smell out of the the sheets, and bedspread, but the mattress is killing me. i've used 2 different kinds of "oxygen" cleaners, Resolve, and a coat of Febreeze. it's not so bad anymore, but it is still there. what i'm really worried about is whether or not this is going to become a habit if the kitten picks up on some odor that the human nose can't pick up.

any tips from those of you with experience?

a fellow local mtb-er...she's 4 months.

he said she was using the litter box, but my girlfriend just switched to some funky-ass hippie litter. i believe the non-traditional litter + new environmet + 2 new other cats + spay/ shots kind of freaked her out a little bit.

I think the only thing you can do is catch the kitten in the act and move her immediately to the litter box. If you don't catch her in mid-pee/poop, there isn't much you can do without locking her up.

Basic Tidy Cats litter works just fine. I don't understand why there are 500 kinds of litter on the market.

Go back to the old litter!!!!!!! Never switch litter suddenly on a cat. They don't realize it's cat litter if it's made from something different. Slowly mix in the new kind of litter to the old litter if you want to change over to the new kind. I'd suggest using one quarter new to three quarters old to start. Then over a period of weeks, increase the proportion of new litter until it's all new litter.

I currently live with three cats. I've had cats all my life. I've found that pine litter work really well--just scoop it fairly often. I've tried the recycled newspaper kind and it's not so good. It doesn't seem to trap odor at all. I guess I should have figured that wet newspaper litter is as gross as wet newspaper.

Those fancy litters can fool cats into thinking its not their box. When you make the switch, and it clearly tells you this, to make the change gradually but mixing the litters progressively increasing the new over a period of time.

I'd switch back to "normal" litter and put the cat in the box. Even if she doesn't have to go she will probably figure out this is where she needs to go.

ok, so you all are saying i should blame my girflriend and make her buy me a new mattress and linens, right?

kidding.

i figured the litter was the problem.

but....i'm more concerned about odors emitting from my mattress that cats can pick up, but not humans....

Yes, I would start with the litter and go from there. What are the sex of the other two cats you own?

Go to Petsmart. They have several products that are specifically made to remove the odor of cat urine. We've used some of this stuff with good results:

Hmm... I had the same thing happen... I tossed the mattress, so I guess that's not much help...

I'm still trying to get cat-wee smell out of some section of my living room carpet... I'm guessing it'll have to be tossed as well.

Along the same lines, we also tried some fancy-schmancy litter that Ghettorigged recommended. The cats hated it. Switched one of the litter boxes to Arm & Hammer Multi-cat litter and that's the only one they use.

if i had a spare $300 to buy a new queen mattress, i'd do that. but that option is pretty much out of the question.

First of all, use normal "sand" type litter. That other crap is useless.

Second, if the cat keeps going on the bed, put the litterbox on the bed for a while (except when you're sleeping in it of course), then gradually move it to the floor and eventually to a corner or something.

cats are weird I had one that would pee on any article of clothing that was sweaty and left on the ground (I think she was trying to get me to pick up my room or something)

Maynard (roomie's cat) will piss on her backpack. as a matter of fact, he did last week and roomie just left it in her room for a few days. that was awesome to come home to.

My cats are really good and have never gone outside the litter box in the years we've had them, however, we did switch the litter (from the sand kind to the pine kind) once 2 years ago and 2 days after the switch when I went to change the litter, I noticed they didn't use it. I immediately ran out of the house, bought the old litter, and put it in their boxes and both immediately ran to boxes and did their business.

My cat started pissing in the house when he was about 1 year old. Luckily it was in on the cement basement floor. I was trying to keep him as an indoor cat but the peeing was too much so I started to let him outside hoping a car would crush him or a stray dog would tear him to shreds. Well none of that happened but he only goes otside now. I have a litter box but he only uses it if he gets stuck inside for more than a day or so. I can go months without cleaning it.

Capt. Jack hit it right on the nose. Never switch litter on a cat like that. Go back to the old litter. Use regular old clay litter. That new age hippy stuff sucks. Way to expensive for something that's going to be pooped and peed on then thrown away. Besides cat litter is just clay. Hippies like clay.

Around here we use "Natures Miracle" to get rid of the pee smell which we get at the local PetCo. Also, look for what's called ONA - Odor Neutralizing Agent. You can usually find it in baby supply stores or hydroponic stores. It's one serious odor remover. It will come in liquid and gel forms. Mommies use it to remove baby poop odors and the hydroponic guuys use it for, well... removing odors. :D

My cats always use the litter box unless they are mad or I am lazy about changing th boxes. Then they go right in front of the bedroom door. I'm surprised the little bastids don't light it on fire too.

If I could only get him to use it the right way instead of drinking out of it...

Hahaha...now that would be funny. Getting so pissed off that you chase the cat around your furnished home trying to piss on it...funny until the cornered cat dives at the instrument of its torture, sinks teeth and front claws into it like it was a fake catnip birdy, then proceeds to do that kangaroo thing where they repeatedly double-kick with the hind legs. :dead:

Actually, I've had really good luck with some of those super-fancy new dyed plastic pearl-like thingies. "Fresh Step" I think it's called. I had 3 cats, so there was a bit of an oder problem sometimes, and that litter did an amazing job of killing pretty much all of the smell. I have 2 cats now, and I've switched to a mix of regular cheap sand stuff, and the Fresh Step. It costs a lot less (the other stuff is like $15 for an 8lb bag) than the sand, so I fill the box with 1/3 pearls and 2/3s sand. Works great, the sand clumps it, and the pearls cut the smell.
So that's my custom mix.
Good luck on the mattress though, my experience is that the smell is pretty deep in there, I'm not sure it'll ever come out...

jeez...too many people in this thread need to brush up on their feline knowledge...I'm not trying to come off as a know it all...but if you're going to co-habitate with cats at least learn how to care for them properly....D

I put the litter box for my two little monsters in the bathroom.. That way the cats & I can have a little friendly competition when it comes to odors.. :blah:

I've been using the Swheatscoop but it doesn't seem to clump much.. the bottom of pan collects all the urine and gets nasty. I'm planning to get a second litter box to sit next to the other one, I'll probably switch that one to a regular style litter and see how the cats like having a choice.
