I've got pain in both hands, little and ring fingers. Probably some kind of ulnar nerve thing, but I'm not going to worry about it.
Check your elbow. And you know you SHOULD worry about it. ;)

I knnow we have a lot of :monkey:s here that type all day. Who has problems or has had problems with wrists... how bad did it get... what were symptoms/diagnosis, and how did you make it better.
There is a multitude of problems that can occur at the wrist. Anything from fractures, dislocations, or nerve entrapments any where along the brachial plexus. To name them all would be something WAY, WAY too long to fit into a thread.

If you're having problems I could possibly give a differential diagnosis, but to be fair I'd have to do a complete evaluation.

I am in an unfortunate situation of my hands being my greatest tool in my profession and because of laxity I have at all my joints, I am in a splint that limits thumb hyperextension. I have alot of pain at my CMC joint. Luckily it is in my nondominate hand.

Best advice...see a doctor who has ortho experience. Not just a general practice physician. :)

This thread is just a smart-ass comment waiting to happen. I can resist no longer.

Are you absolutely sure the pain in your wrists is from typing and not from some sort self-debauchery?

I am in that shizz deep too... not to mention I am a percussionist. All my methods of making a living are highly dependant on my hands and my wrists.

Just in the last 2 months getting stiffness and uncomfortable odd feelings in wrist... outer sides (pinky side). Mainly in my key command hand (i.e. left). I dont do a lot of actual typing becuase copy is usually supplied to me but I do a sh!t ton of holding down certain keys (option, shift, cmd, space, etc) and mousing.

I am going next wednesday to a ortho guy (wrist specialist). Problem is I have work coming out my ass and gigs booked solid, playing doesnt really bother though... mainly irritating me at work.

Thing is, I have baan doing this for 10 years... why is it acting up now. Only difference in my life has been more gigging and longer sets with this new band.

Back from the dead...so, I'm having an ulnar nerve compression problem. Went to my internal med guy and he confirmed that's the issue. I wake up with my fingers numb, have occasional extreme pain when lifting weights and sometimes constant pain and slight numbness from shoulder or elbow to finger, particularly after working on the computer for a long time. I used chopsticks eating sashimi 2 days ago and the pain hasn't left since then.

Golgi or rob- any advice or solutions you've come accross?

Out of my mind, back in a moment.
Pain from elbow to fingertip or shoulder to fingertip...

Elbow to fingertip could be cubital tunnel compression syndrome, shoulder could be a form of thoracic outlet syndrome. The nerve could be entrapped in the fascia of the upper arm in any number of places.

A good thing to consider may be some neurological testing to rule in/out the places the nerve is entrapped.

I get numbness in my fingers & wrist sometimes. It feels stiff too. I have never gone to the doctor for it. I just suffer like an Apache.

I also have a cyst that comes & goes on my mouse wrist.

when i was in undergrad doing lots of programming and such i had symptoms of carpal tunnel syndrome. i switched to a dvorak keyboard layout for a few months, took less programming-heavy courses, laid off on practicing piano at length, and the symptoms resolved. i don't use dvorak any more -- too inconvenient given that i'm typing at keyboards other than my own for most of the working day.

i thought you could reprogram any keyboard for dvorak
yeah, but when i am in the computer lab (undergrad) or at the hospital i often can't switch the layout due to lack of admin rights or just need to use the computer for a few minutes. more of a pain than it's worth, especially since my wrists don't hurt now in any case.
