I have a few pairs of 48s...he can just wear some thick socks 
Just bolt some cleats to the bottom of his foot. To prevent the screws from tear out drill through an bolt from the other side, use good size washers.
Stainless steel or galvanized?
Def stainless or titanium.
i might have something around that size. but they smell like foot cheese.
i hate shoes that you can smell while wearing but can't yet part with.
aside from the cheese smell they're fine. I don't wear them anymore because they're too big for me (might actually be an 11.5). can't bring myself to part with them though, i swear i'm turning into a hoarder.

He has used them before and liked them. Like I said before I have all the stuff for the clipless pedals minus the shoes so why not just go with the pedals?
Clipless aren't gonna work without the shoes... those clips work with any shoes. 
That's why stosh started a thread asking if anyone has some old shoes they are willing to part with. Pay attention.
I guess if he's too cheap to buy $30 shoes... somebody's smelly old hand-me-downs are a decent option.
