The Maxle on my mate's 08 Race has a bit of an issue. I undid the expander side (LHS) to loosen the maxle but it just pushed the 6mm cap (the 6mm to 10mm adapter part) on the RHS out, without loosening the LHS. I took the RHS 6mm cap totally off to try to get at the 10mm bolt head to get the maxle out, but the skewer is stuck in the maxle and isn't going to come out. I've tried taping the skewer out with a hammer but no luck. Is it safe to give the skewer a hard whack to try to get it out?

Had the same problem with my 09 boxxer. The plastic cone on the left side was stuck in the axle and the spring on that side was not strong enough to push it out.
If you give the skewer a whack, the cone will possibly slip over the grub screw that holds it in place on the left hand plug. The plastic is just too soft.
I fixed this by putting a washer between cone and grub screw.

Now I just have to give it a slight tap from the right to loosen the left side.

Yes, didn't mention that the hammer method is the only way to get it out.

Normally a little tap is all that is needed. Remember next time not tighten it down too hard and its easier to get out.
