Us is the medal leader by a HUGE margin. Now why is it that our athletes kick so much ass? Is it our racialy diverse country? do we have better training methods? Medical reasons? it just seems wierd to me that despite this country's arrogance and pride, we do go to a worldwide competition of athletics, and clean up.

Some interesting info

Medals per million people:

Austrailia: 2.263
Germany: .427
Russia: .398
USA: .283
China: .042

I didnt bother with any countries out of the top 5 in the medal count.

wow thats a cool way to look at it. go aussies!

but even at our .283 per million people, there are ALOT of people in this country. And working in manhattan where ther are 13 million people during the day, that means that 3.679 million medals! GO NYC. (oh, wait, i think there is something wrong with that percentage... or my math is just off?)

Well, despite the fact that there are a whole lot of fat Americans out there, the US has always been a very competitive, sports-oriented country. Along with that comes a lot of great training facilities, a lot of great coaches, money for equipment...

And a large population never hurts, of course, but I don't put a whole lot of stock in that. I'm sure there are plenty of tremendous, olympic-level athletes that, for whatever reason, never end up competing.

Yeah, America are kicking ass at the olympics, I just think its ashame that politics has to be brought into it... Or did the US coverage not broadcast the booing when America won the 200m(?) and the Basketball against Spain.

It is on tonight, 1230 est, but NBC's "live" coverage is actually codeword for "12 hours later" coverage.

Booing...hahahhaa! I love how its always just the US that is accused of having f'd up politics, standards, people, etc...unbelievable...it is sad that politics have to be brought into something like the Olympics...those athletes have worked long and hard for their spot in the Olympics and to have jackasses boo them is really very pathetic...buuuuuuut then again taking a bunch of medals is the biggest FU to all those aholes...

The booing was because the Greek athlete wasn't there... since he missed his drug test he got booted! They were chanting his name and booing when the americans were announced b/c they wanted to see him race teh bigges threat - the USA!

The US vs. Spain thing was b/c of a bad call (something about a timeout...).

I don't think it's all that political, there is more anamosity with the Yankees and the Red Sox....

Ah ok...good...I was going to say how freakin RUDE!

Anyway, did you happen to see this in relation to your avatar since we are on the topic of politics...or not...or whatever, but it's just funny anyway...

Better drugs. Definetly better drugs, oh and better masking agents too.

I disagree. I don't think those in the Olympics are a representative sampling of the population. Sure, a big country can turn out more athletes but the fact is that there are going to be a lot of unbelievable athletes who have never had the chance to be seen.

I would be interested to see the breakdown of what medals went to what country - I think I'll look that up when I get home. Swimming events, for instance, or running events rack up a huge amount of medals for countries because a top athlete can perform just as well in the 400 meter and 200 meter competitions. Whereas a lot of the field events are much more specialized and being good at one doesn't necessarily indicate strength in another.

It's funny that Austrailia is so far ahead, though.

Not necessarily masking agents. Like balco - DESIGNER DRUGS. The whole balco controversy where a company created new drugs and gave them to select athletes. The anti drug agency can only test for drugs that they know of...

What's so funny about it? Everyone knows we Aussies are genetically superior ;) :D
LOL. That and the fact that your government spends like a couple hundred million dollars per year of your tax dollars to find and train athletes. I saw a documentary about the Australian olympics program. It was amazing. Australia pumps so much money into sports. They have the best coaches, best facilities, and best equipment in the world.

The girl who won the gold in the road race said in an interview that she was given a sweet ass road bike when she was a teenager as part of a talent identification program. Dude, if only someone gave me a sweet ass bike when I was a kid. My parents bought me a 50$ K-mart bike and said that's as good as it was going to get.

Well I believe it's partly because the US has better facilities and much better and undetectable drugs. Nevermind the fact almost all the american athletes are imagrants.
Canada just sucks on the otherhand. We can;t even afford any drugs worth taking and I mean if I wanted to be a perfessional swimmer here I would have to train in a 25m pool thats extremly ****ty. I have a friend and she's one of the top junoir swimmers in canada and she plans on moving to the US asap so she has a chance at ever being good.

One small edit,

The Greek fans were booing against the fiasko that led to the booting of the 2 Greek athletes. That booting is attributed by many to their former coach . The other athletes had nothing to do with the booing, and they were thoroughly cheered for during their medal ceremony.

One should ask an American visitor during the olympics about how the hosts behaved to him/her. I am proud that we were friendly to everyone...coz my opinion is that WE SHOULD ALL JUST GET ALONG.

Hmmm...the US is the only nation that uses pro athletes in the Olympics? None of these big soccer coutries have any pro athletes in the Olympics???

The question of "PROs" in the Olympics is very sketchy...I mean how would you define a pro?....someone that all they do every day is train in there respective sports?...or if they get paid for their sports at the end of the day?....if that's true then pretty much every Olympian is a pro...for example in China if you win a gold...you are set for life. ...not including all the endorsement possibilities and such.

A friend of mine was the assistant cycling coach at the Olympic training center in Co Springs. and he says some of these athletes have been training since their teens...and all they know is their sport. ...so much so that if they were forced to live a regular life...they can't ..it be like throwing a domesticated dog in with a pack of wolves and told to try and keep up.

The Olympic spirit is dead...competing for competitions sake and representing your country.
