Holy Crap, did anyone read up on Greece's bill for the Olympics?
Almost 9 BILLION over the old budgie. whoops!

It was in an article about NYC bid for 2012.....

We call it the 'winner's curse,"' Evan Osborne, who teaches sports economics at Wright State University in Ohio, said as he watched costs soar in Athens. "The cities that win the bid for the Olympics are the cities that most overestimate what they are worth."

Athens got another taste of sticker shock Thursday when Greece's 2005 budget was submitted to parliament and the cost of last summer's games was estimated at $14.6 billion.

That tally far exceeds the original estimate of $5.9 billion and made the games by far the most expensive in Olympic history. Sydney 2000 cost $1.5 billion; Atlanta 1996 cost $1.72 billion. Athens spent almost that much - $1.39 billion - on security alone.

Athens' bill does not include the future cost (more than $100 million a year) of maintaining $2.83 billion worth of new or refurbished stadiums and arenas

They can always just do what every other cash strapped country does - default. The EU probably will bail them out.

Nah, I bet they'll do what the US has been doing for the past couple years -- write checks and expect them to clear like the last ones.

Between a rock and a hard place.
They might not have fared as badly if they had been able to get people to come to the Olympics.
Fears of incomplete venues and infrastructure not to mention fear of terrorism due to Greeces proximity to the Mid-East kept A LOT of people away.

I don't recall ever seeing empty seats at an olympic event. But this time there wasn't a single venue that wasn't 1/3 empty.

I want to move to BC!!!
Default ? no....

The official bill is 10.7bill eu, and this is the accurate number. This is indeed the most expensive hosting ever because:

1. Some asshats decided we shoud build high-end venues for sports we dont practice as a nation.
2. Some other asshats pushed us a lot in order to have insane safety measures because of their own foreign policies
3. Some other other asshats, tried their best to give Greece bad publicity for their own financial interests (some UK media that is)
4. Some other other other (Greek) asshats from the previous goverment, left venues behind schedule, leading the new goverment to build them as fast and as good as possible with "money no issue" policies.
5. Some other^4 asshats decided that 320520520854 different sports should be included in the olympic games.... hence more venues = more $$$ . wtf....

So we are talking about a big collection of asshats here that will cost the Greek taxpayer a lot. In the end , we ll get through as always ;).

I can't comment too much on this list, but #2 is pretty much right on. The Bush administration are asshats. And now I will head off to the political forum to avoid further flaming...
