They said that they are hard to get to and it takes 3 hours because we have the v6! WTF -
I told them NO THANKS.
Now what?

I don't think it something we can do. My dad said that some spark plugs are under the engine blockummbikes said:1. Buy tool set at Sears.
2. Go to autoparts store, buy repair guide and spark plugs.
3. Have a fun day of working your car.
Yep, it can suck. You could see if another mechanic would be less expensive.MtnBikerChk said:I don't think it something we can do. My dad said that some spark plugs are under the engine block
Generally, I'm with you - I just questioned this because it really seems crazy.Brian HCM#1 said:You'll be surprised dealers are getting more reasonable in price. It may be worth having Subaru deal with it. When I had my Jeep, they quoted $500 dollars to replace a radiator, I said F-it and did it myself. 3 hours later and complete bloody knuckles and arms, it dawned on me why they charge what they charge. After that, I now pay them the $.

You should never buy a Landrover product.
No one should ever buy one of those overpriced pieces of crap anyway.keeping_it_real said:Feel ashamed that you own a mountain bike but dont have the ability to change a set of sparkplugs.

Yeah, they charge that much because you have to take a good portion of the contents of the engine compartment out of the vehicle to get at the plugs. The flat opposed 6 (it's not a V6, just FYI) is a nightmare to work on.MtnBikerChk said:They said that they are hard to get to and it takes 3 hours because we have the v6! WTF -

I know you're right. We'll probably have them do it - but not TODAY!johnbryanpeters said:I could theoretically change the plugs on my van, which has one of those V-6s with hidden spark plugs, but I have better things to do with my time. The dealer's also better prepared to deal with any contingencies which might occur.

Unless youre a good home mechanic, that statement couldnt be more true.keeping_it_real said:You should never buy a Landrover product.
fixed it for youkeeping_it_real said:You should never buy a Landrover product for your fiance without including a poolboy/mechanic to service it for his meterosexual ass
You can do brakes your self. It's super easy. Extra so if they are all disks. For a couple hundred you can replace rotors and pads, add a liitle extra if you need to replace a caliper. They are literally cheaper to replace than buying new disk brakes for your moutainbike.MtnBikerChk said:We also need brakes and some belts.
$$$
It's not entirely the same. The engine layout is actually a bit different in the H6 models. My Legacy is just about the same as the 2.5 RS, but the H6 is a mess.Grasshopper said:What kind of Subaru do you have? I have a 2.5 rs which is the same engine basically but a 4 banger. My buddy changed my plugs anf it only took about an hour. We did have to take out some stuff, wiper fluid resevoir, air intake but other than that it was not that bad. The are TONS of Subaru forumns wher I am sure you could find more info.
Good Luck!!
I'll second that. Brakes are a snap. Just remove the floating caliper bolt, swing the caliper down, and toss on new pads. About a half hour job max per side.ummbikes said:You can do brakes your self. To do it half ass. You should have the rotors turned before installing new pads everytime.robdamanii said:I'll second that. Brakes are a snap. Just remove the floating caliper bolt, swing the caliper down, and toss on new pads. About a half hour job max per side.
the car went in today for a 60k service. So, 60k service, plus brakes, plus belts, plus spark plugs. Oy. That's going to cost me like a day's pay.johnbryanpeters said:Priorities:

Yeah, we agree. We're just griping about the $$, that's all. It's not a real huge gripe. I'd rank the gripe a 4 on a gripe scale of 1 to 10, with 10 being a the king of gripes.Brian HCM#1 said:IMO, suck it up and bring it to Subaru and have it all done at once. Sometimes dealers offer coupons and specials that may help offset some of the hit. I know it sucks, I dropped $1K this last summer on my truck with the 80K mile service, also had all the fluids & coolant changed too.
It costs about $12 a rotor to have them turned here. I don't turn them every time though. If they aren't glazed, or rough, I don't turn them. The Xterra is a pain in the ass, because of the way they come off.Brian HCM#1 said:To do it half ass. You should have the rotors turned before installing new pads everytime.
Man - as silly as you were from drinkin' last night, I figure you spent $300 on beer.I Are Baboon said:Yeah, we agree. We're just griping about the $$, that's all. It's not a real huge gripe. I'd rank the gripe a 4 on a gripe scale of 1 to 10, with 10 being a the king of gripes.

I know you HAVE to read my posts. There is no way that JBP can do that much deleting, and I haven't seen echo around much.I Are Baboon said:Did loco say something?
Well it's definatly harder to spend $1K on keeping a car functional than dropping the same amout on a new bike frame. Kinda funny how that goes.I Are Baboon said:Yeah, we agree. Sometimes rotors are a bitch to remove, 99.9% of the time the rotors are groved and that will F up the new pads in a hurry.loco said:It costs about $12 a rotor to have them turned here. I wish he would always consolidate my posts like that. It is cool having an "edit" bitch.I Are Baboon said:dude, what the hell is JBP doing to this thread?

Of course, If I ever really got into that, I'd write one to move all posts by Rob, Brian, and bluebug to the SA forum...
