I've heard the 'just stay on my wheel' line twice from FT.
1, my first ride down Porcupine Rim
2, on a fast section of Agate Creek off of Monarch Pass

gotta say, when you can't see clearly what's about to kill you, you DO tend to ride faster.

Yeah - I got doorjambed by another fast buddy on exactly this ride. Fortunately for me, I fell off the *back* of my bike before we hit any of the *really* scary alt-lines. :fie:

Yup. Until I crash. :dead:

I say Porcupine Rim has plenty of scary lines for the 1st timer. Not that there are many options, you take the line in front of you.

Agate Creek as SS said isn't scary just stupid fast and rocky.

i'm just curious as to what makes them scary? or is it just the general blasting over chunder at mach stupid sort of general danger?

We're overthinking this.
Riding blind at speed is the only thing I was talking about.
I don't know... That descent at Monarch down baby head sized scree with square edge drainage cuts every 100 or so feet, on a 12" wide trail, going fingers off levers fast was pretty fucking dodgy. Wrecking there would have sent you waaaaaay down the slope.

The ones I'm thinking of are:
  • The right-side alt line that leads to a ~6(?) footer with a somewhat shitty (almost flat) landing
  • The left-side alt line that leads to a hip then a drop - FTS
  • The dodgy slab near the end of the trail :fie:
I'd bet there are lots more I don't know about... :D

Riding the baggage carousel.
There is an old motorcycle adage that I like to apply to bicycles, especially in the presence of a wild man like Full Trucker.

"Ride your own ride".

People tend to die when they push themselves trying to keep up with riders like him. :D

Hmmm... left of the main double track? I don't think I have...

And when you say "fun" do you mean "scary and dangerous"? :D

ETA: Is this what you mean?

If so - this is the second line I referred to above with a "hip" even though it apparently doesn't have one. My rememberer sucks. But for the record: FTS.

Couple-a things...
  1. The line with the hip to the diagonal rock slab is in that same area in the video that @SkaredShtles posted... I think. That area has a bunch of weird alt-lines and such. Kind of a "fun zone" you can play around in.
  2. The thing I call the "diving board" is not in that area at all... @rideit what diving board are you talking about? If it's the one I'm thinking of, I didn't even know there were lines off of it to the rider's left.
  3. I agree with @Nick that it's the blind speed of Porucpine (or really anywhere) that makes things scary and/or dangerous. Porcupine isn't that gnarly of a ride, really. But you can go as fast as you are brave and that notches up the risk factor exponentially.
  4. I just like to give you guys sh!t... I don't really think any of us ride that fast. Except for maybe mtg or woo... those guys are maniacs.

Edit to add: this is what I call the diving board:

I don't think I've hucked this thing to flat since my only bike was a hardtail, to be honest.

are you still heading there before Winter?
a friend was out last weekend, got shuttled all the way up to Burro.
Yes, I will be there for a week starting next Tuesday. I am pretty much all healed up, have been getting a few PR’s on chunky downhills around here.
cant wait to ride with some of y’all.
will be going “90%”...

I am referring to the classic huck to flat. (In SS’s video)
a little bit past there. The line I am talking about is quite long, with a bunch of medium drops.
It drops you off at that rock slab thing lower down in the other video.
they might have effectively blocked it off, I don’t know.
I was following Chris Van Dine, I couldn’t find it last time I rode TWE.
Agree with you about speed, compared to really fast guys, we are slugs.

That second guy just about augured in...
Yeah, same spot as the video I posted. The diving board. Okay then.

So... basically just all the droppy stuff down the left lane leading into the diving board? I think there's a couple of those "medium drops" that you can actually gap... like hit one with enough speed to clear the one after it as well? Risky, but so satisfying. Not to be attempted in a cross wind... don't ask how I know this.

For @jonKranked here's a pretty good video showing Porc Rim in it's entirety.

I think Seth is a pretty good story teller, and he definitely gets some highlights of the trail. There are some actually techy sections that require fairly precise riding, particularly in the last section "Porcupine Singletrack" which is in my top 3 sections of this ride. I think I still like the Burro Pass section better, but it's higher up than these guys were able to start.

You go first!
No no no... you go first.
