Or Americans are amoral jerks...

The stats are pretty bad when look at incarceration rates per capita. South Africa only has 60% of the prisoners that the US does. Check out the list and tell me when you hit another country that you'd like to live in after the US.

I get down to #46...
heh heh NZ's at 55th place on that list, @ 160 that's less than 25% of yours!!.... And we bitch about how high our incarceration rate is!

So we're falling short of Somalia's stellar 0 per 100,000 residents?? Good lord, we'd best find out what THEY'RE doing so well...

Frankly, overly harsh government can possibly lessen crime, other than that of desperation or survival, with a significant deterrent effect. And we don't want that...America's crime prevalence may stem from America's roots as a free-wheeling, less-than-law-abiding place (read: the Revolution, the old west, etc.)
What beach lodged all that sand in your vagina? Costa Rica, maybe? Kidwoo's choice...

As far as overly harsh government lessening crime, I think we can look to Singapore. Still less than half per capita. To me, this debate looks a little like the healthcare one. We're paying twice as much as we should be and getting worse results.

That, or we're just a nation of unhealthy murderers, rapists, and thieves.

It's TV's fault. Your non stop diet of CSI, SVU etc...

Edit: (This is obviously actually only part of the cause... duh...)

There is probably some truth in that. Americans are pretty desensitized to violence by all the TV. And yet when some kid who has been picked on at school for his entire life finally breaks down and starts shooting at people everyone acts surprised.

Canadians get the same tv. Except in Canada you hear the f-word and see some boobies late at night on the weekends. Maybe that makes all the difference?

Australia too, plus you can say cunt. In Japan the flange is censored. Tits are OK even in kids cartoons. Upskirts too, all fun for the kiddies.

Please, please don't forget the tentacles. They're the backbone of an orderly society.

You should create an anime centered on 'octo-ewe,' a genetically engineered sheep/mollusk hybrid of the future, guaranteed to please audiences all across the Pacific.

I'm a part of that statistic. My dog got out and and nipped some guy who then called the cops. I plead guilty to a class II misdemeanor of "dog at large" to the tune of a $500 "contribution" to the humane society and one year probation. Don't laugh. :busted:

Edit: In the effort to not wrongfully accuse hounds, it's the dog in my avatar. She's a sweetheart.

brilliant punishment! I like 'activist' judges that punish people by making them do something positive, like your contribution.
