MEMPHIS, Tenn. - An unabashed racist will represent the Republican party in the November election for a congressional seat after a write-in candidate failed to derail his effort.

Surprising in Tennessee.....hardly. In fact in Louisanna/East Texas it is the GOP modus operandi. I mean if David Dukes never entered the national arena he would still be holding office down there. GOP = Klan in some states. Damn scary.....jdcamb

Fairs fair though, he did sneak in under the radar a bit. I guess that means though that the radar needs a decent bit of tweaking.

Wow Nick and JD.

For JD especially, who always seems to preach tolerance and understanding...you sure do talk about the south with an obvious ignorance. Tell me, which states exactly have republican leaders who are KKK members as you claim? TN in fact has a democrat as a governor right now.
Nick, Ive lived in the south most of my life and do you know how many KKK even members Ive seen? How many cross burnings? How many rallies? ZERO. And in memphis of all places...which is a town rich in african american culture BTW, with Beale St. and all of that...I just dont know WTF youre talking about. Klannified?

Your right. I have no actual direct experience or involvment in politics in Louisanna or Tennessee and was basically talking out my ass.. I have read about David Dukes and some assorted articles concerning the subject, taken Political Science classes that illustrated or suggested connections between the Klan and Politics in the south. I however cannot site specific examples or even remotely come up with a case of it that would count as a actual example. I am sorry for that. I have spent time in Lousianna/East Texas and been all through the south and can't recall ever seeing any signs of the Klan. I was making a sweeping generalization based on a sterotype. Once again sorry for that..... I need to practice what I preach or shut the **** up.......jdcamb

Unless you are associated with an active member of the klan, i seriously doubt you would be "invited" to a cross burning. Just because you don;t see it don't mean it doesn't exist.

I gotta say i went over board with the statement, I apologize for the over-generalizing statement, but your statement of "I've never seen a KKK member" is over board too, how do you tell a KKK member from your neighbors? You can't unless they wear a hood and solute Hitler, right?

Where I live, in california, about 15 miles away in a place called castro valley there is a large hub of known KKK and aryan nation members and sympathizers. think about it, 15 miles away from the most liberal area of the country. What makes you think that you know what goes on in the woods all over the country?

by the way, my uncle visited and lived in memphis for a while, and he has seen klan members around. Sometimes minorities can smell that, if you can say, and the 88/14 tattoos gave it away way too easily.

It's just more stereotyping. Just like Arabs are terrorists, the French are cowards and republican voters are warmongers; southerners are racists.

well i lhave lived in memphis for 23 years now, and i can tell you that race relations here are certainly no worse than they are in any other part of the country. all the crazy klan members that we had running around pretty much died down when we elected and kept a black mayor in office going on about 15 years now. we've got white people that arent afraid to say that they hate black people, and we have certainly got black people that arent afraid to say they hate white people, but i think the last lynching was quite some time ago. i could take you to a member of the arayan nations house. its a fortress of sorts, in the middles of the ghetto (of all places) covered in barbed wire and rebel flags. i can also assure you that those wackos are in the minority in this town. we (the south) certainly arent as backward as the media would have you belive and the university of memphis has the largest applied urban anthropology program in the country right now. we are a ****ing city. we've got our share of racists but it seems like you do too. so you can get Klanified out there in california and i'll stay in the south, where i dont have the terminator as my governor, where my cost of living is low, and where i dont run the risk of falling off the side of the country. (arent regional stereotypes old and overplayed).

The funny thing is that David Duke was elected in a majority democratic and black distict down in south LA.

But... Sen Robert Byrd (D-WVa) was the Grand Dragon/Wizard of the KKK at one time..
