I would say Slayers are good reliable bikes. RM has used that suspension design for years. They just revised the Slayer for 2006 so I bet you can find a 2005 at a great price now.
Im not a fan of the old "3-d link" suspension. I rode a spice back in 2001 and i have ridden one of the first gen slayers and the suspension is not that impressive. Their other designs such as the thrust link, and whatever they are calling the set up on those 4.5" trail bikes are really nice. The new slayer design for 06 looks very promising, id certainly consider it.
