Had a wierd OTB last night on my local ST. Was at speed and ended up cracking my helmet and getting a real nice red contusion over my left eye (basically from the top of my eyebrow to my hairline). When I hit the dirt with my head I heard a whole lot of "crunching" going on. This was the first time, when crashing head first, that I laid there and did inventory on my bod before getting up to make sure I hadn't broke my neck or something. More than likely the crunching I heard was my helmet and visor being chewed up. The helmet (Giro E2) is cracked through the foam to the shell in a couple places. My neck doesn't hurt all that much, but I'm really stiff between my shoulder blades and lower neck.

So do you think I should see my Doc and ask him to X-ray my upper back and lower neck? From my limited understanding of such things I guess it is possible that one can mess up a vertebra pretty good and still function somewhat normally. Again I don't have much pain so I'm probably being overly precautious at this point.

I now need a new lid. Thinking about picking up another E2. I would have gotten that Bell that was on steepandcheap.com last week, but Bells don't fit my huge melon too well. Anybody using a Xen? Is it too hot? Other recs?

Moff, glad to hear you weren't hurt too badly!

If you wrecked hard enough to crack a helmet you are probably going to be feeling the stiffness and other effects of the wreck for a while... If you have health care and dont have a huge "copay" stop by the doc's... If you do have high copay or no insurance (ITS TIME TO GET SOME INSURANCE!!!) you can probably wait a day or two to see if it starts to loosen up.... monitor it closely. if anything feels weird, GET TO THE DOC's! if you notice any change in mobility and strength differences between sides of the body, you probably tweeked your neck and back, in which case I would see a good chiropractor (who works with sports injurys etc.) choose a chiro wisely though some will just crack you and tell you comeback tomorrow!... (I call them Quackopractors) I have a fantastic one that I trust, and only see him when I need to...

I have a Xen, and like it, but it is hot! I like the way the straps are mounted through the molded foam. the thing stays on my head great, but try it on first, it fits different than the E2!

I'd say use your own judgement on the doc. If you are concerned or if it is getting worse go to the doc. No harm in being on the safe side.

As for the helmet... I cracked my last high end Giro. They have a nice replacement discount. Thats how I was able to afford my current Xen.

Giro will crash replacement that for a really good price (well below cost normally). They are really good about that. They helmet did exactly what it was supposed to do.

sounds like you may just have a nice concussion. while vertebral fracture may be possible, just from what you said, i don't get that impression. fractures are typically very tender to touch/pressure over or near the spot of the fracture. the other possibility is either a mild dislocation or herniated disc.

also if you have any neurological complaints (hoarseness, shoulder/arm/hand weakness or tingling) i would definitely goto the ER right away. for soreness/achs and pains, just the typical warm compress, rest, and antiinflammatories should do the trick

of course, should you have any doubts or if symptoms are worsening or not getting better in a next couple of days, i would go see your orthopedist.

The Xen is the best fitting helmet I've had. I also have a newer E2 that I don't like nearly as much. I don't find the Xen that much hotter, and I live in Texas.

The only thing about the Xen that I don't like is that it has a valley down the peak line and odd placed vents that makes mounting my light a pain.

Doesn't Bell own Giro?

yup, what he said, there's great and there's terrible. I love mine ; former xc racer who taught me to ride. Nothing like being treated right on on the trail after an OTB experience! Ask around, you want one that's wellness oriented (minimal treatment, with goal of NOT having you come in for treatment!) not someone who wants to have an ongoing program.

Update: Let's see...this happened on Thursday the pain/stiffness went away by Sunday so I didn't see a Dr. My new flat black Xen arrived today. Sweet. My old Evo II helmet that I wore in the meantime is nasty.

Boston....outside of it....
OMGF and I have a friend that crashed and landed on his head. His helmet was dented.

He is convinced that he does not need a new helmet.

This past weekend, he went riding around DC with some friends (nobody had a helmet). They were doing some kind of jumps near the Lincoln memorial.......... anyway....

on the way back, one of the guys was buzzing this chick's tire, and it caused her to crash and land on her head. They took her to the emergency room in an ambulance.

So.... OMGF and I were like........yeah, we're not riding with you idiots.
