Hi - I ride a hardtail 29er (Gary Fisher XCal) and I am wondering what a good tire would be for local Orange County, California cross-country stuff like Whiting Ranch, El Moro Canyon, Aliso Woods, etc. I occasionally also get to Big Bear.

These trails have some hardpack, some loose sand (which my standard OEm Bontrager Jones Rac-X tires are terrible in), and some fine dirt over hard ground (in summer)...so whatever will work in those conditions might be good.

A buddy of mine has the Maxxis tires...says they do well in sand...

any other suggestions?

I ride mich. dry 2's a 2.3" front and 2.0" rear. They are great and grip super well on the dry rock and hard pack. In sand they can woble here and there but with large volume up front are pretty predictable. I have tried small block 8's as well but perfer the mich. because they break away into a drift more gradually on my trail bike. I have fonud that tires with larger nobs tend to roll and not offer much more grip for how much rolling resistance they ad. Also the trails I ride the most are in Aliso woods.
