Well they seem to allow the people of this great country organize and voice their opinion without squashing their rights afforded to them in the constitution.
This last weekend there was a conference in DT Seattle WA with Govenors from all around the US. Large protests were scheduled, streets were closed off, routes planned for marches, etc.
What is the BIG deal! It worked out fine last weekend. No one is crying about losing their freedom and being squashed by the man. They were given space to operate and the city could plan for the crappy traffic (worst than normal) and facilitate the groups so they could protest.
Tell me again why permits and organizing a protest is a bad thing?
