One thing I've found interesting is how other cultures treat the after life. Particularly eastern cultures - Chinese, Buddhist, and Hindu. They don't believe in the concept of "heaven" as many do, however they still feel impelled to lead good, moral lives.
You can add Judaism to that list as well (it was/is an eastern religion), the focus was on how one lived here and now, not all wrapped up in where they would end up when they die. Judaism (mostly) beleives that everyone will partake in the afterlife, including Gentiles. This was the case in the 1st century.....so somewhere there was a disconnect after the first of the 2nd century when Judaism and Christianity "offically" split.
Major sections of Christianity (Baptist & Evangelical mostly from what I've seen) don't have this emphasis, the emphasis isn't hear and now, but "one day", the emphasis isn't making this world a better place (bringing "Heaven to earth" as Jesus taught) but rather getting one's ticket punched to get the "f" out (which ironically is very similar ideologically to gnosticism, a 1st / 2nd century heresy). How many Baptist's and Evangelical's are really concerned about the environment? Very few I'd wager, because in their mind they are getting out of here so who cares what we do to the planet.
Sadly it's become a very compartmentalized religious system and not holistic at all.
1-You're a Christian who isn't gay, and because you don't have homosexual desires, it's a very easy "sin" for you to avoid and it feeds your sense of moral superiority. This is why there is much less emphasis on adultery than there is homosexuality, for example.
2-Much less likely, you're a Christian who is homosexual, and you think that violently persecuting yourself and others is a great way to make yourself believe that you're not really gay.
Number 1 is so easy to jump on. Very few sermons from my history were ever preached on lust and what Jesus really calls lust, or pornography, or adultery.........was all very hush hush, but homosexuality........the pastor would stomp, beat on the pulpit and spit when he got wound up on "them homosexuals"...........
Having just recently decided myself that all organized religion is most likely B.S., I have decided that it would be best if my daughter grew up with the God of Homer:
