anyone have any recommendations? i should have thought of this when we built our addition, as it'd be nice to have sound outside on the deck (esp once the hot tub is installed), but it should be easy enough to install after the fact.

i've seen some cambridge soundworks ones, but does anyone have any experience they can offer?

damn, that's a lot of coin for something which is gonna get snow and rain.

i saw the cambridge soundworks speakers on sale for $150, adn they got good reviews on audioreview.com. think i'll get 'em; i've been happy w/ the CSW surround stuff i have.

Back when I was doing home installations in central PA, I put in a lot of the JBL Northridge speakers on decks and patios. I can't speak to the quality as I'm sure the customers requests were price driven (compared to the Bose speakers we also carried). JBL does have a pretty decent name though.

I have Sonance for my backyard, they sound good, but a little pricy @ $550-$799.

Hey! That's what I have too... they sound great. I have them hooked up to a Russound digital control pad... :D

In fact, Sonance is what all of my home audio speakers are... all are flush mounted in the walls or ceilings... audio bliss...

Narlus - right in your backyard - Cambridge Soundworks - you won't be disspointed I suspect. Top notch quality for really high bang for the buck prices!!

edit: I see that you are way ahead of me already!

Two thumbs up for Cambridge Soundworks speakers though!! :thumb: :thumb:

my a/d/s floor-standing speakers are still going strong, and i bought 'em in '86. they look like they've changed direction a bit, though; most stuff seems tailored to architectural/home theater or car stuff.

brian, no matter how good yr stereo is, stuff like Hanoi Rocks, Poison, Winger, and Styx is still gonna sound bad.

I sold my a/d/s floor standing speakers a few years ago and bought some used 1985 Klipsch Forte's, I love them :thumb: I still do sometimes listen to Pioson, but I also still enjoy Ratt, Tesla, Cinderella along with lots of good metal of today :thumb:

brian, that's funny that you got the fortes, because that was my other choice; it was between the a/d/s L880s and the Klipsch.

my boss just got some new speakers (martin logans), and it's got me pining for more audio gear.

I'm yet to hear a good sounding outdoor speaker - though part of that is probably accoustics. Find ones that come from a company who makes indoor speakers that you like. Sound quality is soooo subjective I don't like recommending a particular speaker.

And for the record... a speaker can only sound as good as the source and the power that's driving it. You put a $10,000 B&W behind a sony receiver and it's going to sound like crap, I don't care what you say.

If the music is good, I don't care what is used to play it. Music's good. You don't need to spend a crapload to enjoy it.

boombox is definitely cheaper and would work, but i'd like to have the ability to have the same tunes playing in 3 different areas, and my A/V receiver can handle another set of speakers. this way, i can play stuff of my main system, my surround system and outside, if i'm having a party.

and it's lot cheaper than shelling out for the fancy-pants russound stuff.

3 boomboxes!?? :p Just kidding. I can understand the need. Then again I've made due in the past with one set of speakers. Just turn it up loud enough for everyone to hear. Including the neighbors. :blah:

Not true, its the oposite. I'm not saying what you said wasn't fully true but the speakers are THE most important part of the system.

I still think the Fortes were Klipsch's best sounding speaker in the day, the new stuff I think is crap. They are way efficient and sound real smooth, its a great rock/metal speaker.

what is the brand? i did a search on the 1st pic, and the website was german and still had prices in deutsche marks.
Its a Lexicon DC-1, the new stuff is way cool, but I scored this at cost in 1997, the preamp alone retailed for $5K.

Yes and no. For most people, at most price points, speakers will have the greatest impact on sound. However, once you get into decent stuff and actually listen to music... the amp becomes verrrrrry important.

:::EDIT:::
I suspect we are making the same point... just coming at it from different perspectives.

Thats decent stuff, when you are buying something at Socket Curcus and on a budget, I'd put more $ into the speakers.

just out of curiosity... what speakers do you run? It's been a while since I really payed attention to HT gear, but I still enjoy it.

Not to hi-jack the thread, but I've just finished our deck, and I was a moron and didn't prewire for outside. Since you all are already here debating. What would be a reasonable way to get the wire to the out side. I was an idiot and wired the upstairs game room but not the patio. I have a dual zone tuner, which I love.

I've thought about going which something less expensive, like a JBL or something, but I like the cambridge too.

I'm running definitive technology inside. I love these things, but I hardly see anyone running them, and have often wondered why.

Like I said above 1985 Klipsch Fortes, its by no means the best speaker on the market, but for my music tastes they sound great. I looked at several different speakers when I put together my system, settled on a/d/s for everything since I got them at cost from a friend, but never really liked the way they sounded. I also listened to a lot of high-end speakers that work great with their demo CD's but when I tried mine,(I brought the ones that were recorded real well) they didn't have the range I was looking for. It's hard to find the perfect speaker for all music, so since I listen to 99.9% rock & metal I needed something to fit my needs.
