Oh man there's this guy on ridemonkey that just asked about some pants that don't fit. He could really use this perspective. Maybe hop on over there and let him know.
Meh, still doesn’t top the thread where some dude with a giant lifted brodozer asked for advise on how to haul his bike.
Pure gold.

I sometimes buy pants at dicks sporting goods in the golf area. Though I wouldn’t call them dress pants really.

I found a bunch of old pictures of my grandpa camping in a three piece suit. I’ve seen a bunch of old photos like that. Now I want to go buy a bunch of old suits at the thrift store and wear them camping and doing shit around the house.

When my grandfather on my mother's side of the family would change the oil in his car he would put a jumpsuit on over his suit. My fathers father would wear nothing but a jumpsuit with the top unzipped and tied around his waist. That would be a British grandfather vs one In New Jersey.

I might need a jump suit.

We did this for a friend's bachelor party. Took the Mojave Road from Barstow to Laughlin, rule was you had to wear your suit at all times once you got them, and all the way home. I chose to forgo my sleeping bag while camping, hit the tables in an absolutely trashed green suit, was still probably the least trashy person in Laughlin.

Check men's wearhouse for their made to measure options (Aboud label). I have two of the China-made suits and they're passable quality for what you pay...but I would be sure your salesman actually has a clue, too.

Nordstrom has made to measure options as well. I got one of their Hart Schaffner suits a couple years back and it's my favorite. Visit during the summer Anniversary Sale.

Or check around your local tailor. Pants aren't hard to make and many of them will do so for you. A suit coat is a different, very specialist task, but trousers are relatively easy.

This guy also travels the US for fittings. Have a suit and it's of decent quality and fit.

hey gang
does anybody have go-to brands of clothing for people who are endowed of thigh? I bought some dress pants the other day and my meat-thighs looked ridiculous in pants that fit around the waist well. Admittedly they were slim fit but I don't want to swing too far into "classic fit" territory for fear of being labeled as a boomer and becoming my dad.

Gap Athletic fit (and BR) works wells for me, but they don't really make dress pants.
why did you buy pants that don’t fit?

in short, try them on… buy some pants that fit in the leg and at least close in the waist (a bit big is ok, not too small), then get them adjusted for fit at a tailor. It’s not expensive and the result is excellent… or learn to tailor them yourself… it’s not that hard.

it’s not that hard.
I guess we live in slightly different worlds. I have a five year old and getting the time to even physically shop (vs virtually) is non existant. So, I picked out my size in some pants that i liked, and tried them on when I got home. Turned out they didn't fit. I have other pants in a smaller size from a different brand in slim fit that actually fit, so I thought "hey, these larger pants that are the same fit will probably fit me". It turns out that different brands have different definitions of "slim" vs. "regular" and anything in between, so I thought I would ask people what they buy. Shit, I have several pairs of pants from Levis or Gap/BR that are the same size but measure differently around the waist. Serves me right for thinking anybody on RM wears pants other than jorts.

I think you’re missing something.

Sizes vary wildly between brands… fit even more so. And things change over time… so that slim you bought 5 years ago doesn’t necessarily mean anything today. You need to try them on before buying. I see nobody else has given recommendations. What I suggest is trying a bunch of stuff. In time, you’ll find something that works. Get a few of them when you do.

The not hard comment was about adjusting trousers/tapering the leg. If you can do bike repair, it’s probably a similar level of difficulty. From my view it’s kind of like adjusting a suspension tune or bleeding brakes that are spongy. Takes some special equipment, but is pretty straightforward. Hemming pants is like changing tires or brake pads.

The stuff I buy is only available in montreal, so that’s of no use to you. I’ve tried proper cloth for shirts and a pair of pants. The shirts were impressive, the pants were a touch big in the waist, but otherwise great. I also adjust things myself.

This keeps getting better. You're saying that instead of buying online you actually went into a store to buy pants but didn't take a minute to try them on first?

I get what he is saying, in that a lot of contemporary cuts are not accommodating to anyone with an ass/thighs (or look way too baggy if they do) and the issues remain across a lot of retailers. Sizing up still typically ends up being un-tailorable without a full re-cut of the trousers because of the issues of shape and proportion.

Made to measure is the way to go, since so many relatively inexpensive options exist for MTM trousers. It's not perfect compared to true bespoke clothing but it's generally much better.

I would def check Jos A Banks or Brooks Brothers too, just on the off chance something works.

Jos A Banks usually has a few closeouts mixed in the Racks. I have had good luck finding Athletic cut suits there.

Oh I agree it's hard to find clothes off the rack that fit. It's just that like a lot of people I'm usually buying stuff online these days, and I can't imagine buying a piece of clothing in person without trying it on.

Kohls has a wide variety of pant sizes on hand. The ability to try on dress shirts and ties also. JC Penny for hats.

Last time I went to see my brother in Scotland I had to take him like five or six pairs of shorts that fit my legs coz he couldn't get any that fit him over there.
The last time I wore dress pants was to a wedding and the asshat photographer made us do a starjump or some dumb shit you do on a weding day because you are a white middle aged male and you do what you are told.
Got to wear shorts to one wedding and I got home at near 6am with no phone or watch, it was awesome! You can't be relaxed in long pants, they are dumb, unless it is fuck off cold.

I tossed all of my "dress" clothing when I retired.
