The 13-year-old boy who Nassau police said was in the backseat of a sport utility vehicle with a 44-year-old mom attends the same middle school in Baldwin where she serves as a PTA vice president, school district officials said in a statement Tuesday.
The woman, Joan Tuckruskye, of Baldwin, is a vice president of the Baldwin Middle School Parent-Teacher Association.
Nassau police said Tuesday they are continuing to investigate whether Tuckruskye and the boy had sex, with the possibility of upgrading the misdemeanor charge of endangering the welfare of a child.
Citing the police investigation, school officials would not provide additional details Tuesday other than to confirm in the statement that the boy attends Baldwin Middle School.
"However, please be assured that Baldwin Middle School Principal James Brown has met with administrators and staff to help students deal with any information or hearsay in regard to this case," the statement said. "The district is working to maintain a normal and calm school environment for all students while police investigate."
The parked, running 2008 Nissan Pathfinder behind Meadow Elementary School in Baldwin seemed suspicious to officers Friday night, said Det. Lt. Kevin Smith.
"They tapped on a rear window," Smith said of the two First Precinct officers. The windows were fogged, he said, but the officers could make out two figures inside.
"They noticed both of the individuals were not clothed from the waist down," Smith said.
The officers asked for identification, and the boy said he was 18. Smith said police were skeptical about the age of the boy, who later said he was 15. Later that evening, during an examination at Nassau University Medical Center, it was determined that the boy, whom police would not name, is 13, Smith said.
Tuckruskye, who could not be reached Tuesday, was charged with endangering the welfare of a child, a misdemeanor. If convicted, she could face up to a year in jail.
Smith said police have information Tuckruskye and the boy have met several times.
Her defense attorney, Brian Griffin, of Garden City, said Tuckruskye "is well-respected and very active in her community. She has never been in trouble nor arrested before."
Tuckruskye has organized book fairs and other fundraisers, said Loretta Crespo, a fellow middle school PTA vice president. "I've always seen her at meetings but I don't know her personally," Crespo said. "I just know her as another mom who helps out."
