Parents Go on Strike, Move to Front Yard
AP via Yahoo | 8 Dec

DELTONA, Fla. - Even though the dishes, garbage and dirty laundry were piling up, homeowners Cat and Harlan Barnard were getting no help from their two children.

After begging and pleading with their 17-year-old son and 12-year-old daughter to help out around the house, the Barnards decided they were fed up. So they went on strike — and moved out to the front yard.

"This was our last-ditch effort," Cat Barnard said.

Since Monday morning, the Barnards have lived in a tent in their front yard, going inside the house only to use the restroom or shower. The couple sits on lawn chairs and roasts marshmallows over a hibachi.

Their children were confused on the first day when they came home from school. "It's extremely inconvenient," said their son, Ben Barnard. "Every time the phone rings, we have to run outside to give it to them."

Whether the couple's actions could be regarded as abandonment depends on how much guidance the parents are still providing and "if the children are suffering as a result," said Carrie Hoeppner, a spokeswoman with the Department of Children & Families in Orange County.

But Cat Barnard says the strike may already be paying dividends. She noted that her daughter washed her own clothes for the first time on Tuesday.

"This is war," Cat Barnard said. "I love my babies, but I don't like what they're doing."

Thats awesome, seems like it's working too. I hate people like the social worker why doesn't she just take a step back and let the parents do what they think is best for their kids? The kids obviously aren't getting hurt and are probably learning a valuable lesson about the responsibilities of growing up.

That was actually in our local paper yesterday...

I don't know why it's such a big deal. What makes this interesting in any way? Whoop dee doo, they're trying a different technique to make their kids listen.

If it's them shirking their responsibility that has people worked up, well, there's a billion other negligent parents who do far worse; at least these parents are there at the house if something happens.

Still sounds idiotic to me, something is not right. Probably normal to a fleabag like you though from the trailer parks.

That's 'manufactured home' resorts.... not 'trailer' parks....

Actually a manufactured home is different from a mobile home. Manufactured homes are built somewhere then cut into sections, driven to the site and then put on a foundation. Mobile homes are built somewhere, trailered to the park then set on special jackstands and the wheels are taken off. Just to let you know.

well, i think the social services people get outta hand sometimes. "the parents arent doing their job so lets take em to group home so they can grow up without parents."

Actually, not to derail the thread (wait, who am I kidding? I don't care if we derail the thread), but I think you'd be pretty suprised at the quality of a lot of pre-fab (i.e. "manufactured") homes. The sister and her husband of an ex looked into them and I got to see a lot of marketing literature and some of the real houses - they're damn nice.

As drtbikrr said, they're just normal houses, only they're not built on site and they're "cookie cutter" (i.e. here's a bunch of floorplans, pick the one you want - you can make lots of modifications, though).

Hell, considering the number of people that trust "ol' Grampy" to build, side, wire, and paint their house, they're probably higher than average quality :p

I'd probably never get one anyway, though - I'm a little too picky when it comes to what I want in a house.

..and they depreciate like a car... yet you pay for it for 30 years.

yeah, ill trust ol' grampy whose built a name on reputation of quality, or myself to inspect it before I buy one of those vinyl sided heaps. they're worth next to nothing and last about like a trailer does. No way.
Im actually looking into getting my contractors' license so I can build those log cabin kits for folks around here in the summertime when im not teaching. those things are actually pretty decent quality, as in, big ass logs, and are relatively cheap too. That's as close to pre fabricated as Id ever get.

Well, Burly, that's like saying all cars are junk simply because there's Kias on the market.

You can buy good quality ones, and poor quality ones, it just depends on what you want to spend and if you research what you're getting carefully.

Some cars have built a reputation of quality. This isnt the case, as yet, with trailer houses, doublewides, prefabs, modular homes or whatever politically correct name you want to give them. They'll never be worth what a regular house is and its a losing investment most of the time since the deprecate unlike houses which gain value. Not worth it IMO.

Try refinancing a used trailer house sometime...

i'll chime in for BV since he's slow on the draw, must have work to do  : deprecate != depreciate, and you are searching for the latter.

i thought this line summed up the article:

The tipping point may have been when Benjamin didn't offer to help his sweating, struggling mother work on the lawn Sunday, even though she should have been recovering from oral surgery.
i have no pity for the parents (sweating AND struggling  ) or the kids

This whole thing cracks me up! If my parents ever went on strike, I would have parties all the time, and there is nothing they could do about it, because they are outside!

But seriously, at least someone is trying to take a new spin on things. I mean, yeah, we may think its stoopid, but, as was pointed out, it seems to be working.

When I didn't take out the trash like I was supposed to do, my mom put it in the middle of my bed. When I didn't clean my room as I was supposed to do, my mom did it for me.....by taking everything on the floor and dresser and throwing it all away. That cured me of laziness real quick. "Begging and pleading" for me to "help" was never part of the equation. I saw this story on the news-These parents are idiots.
