Pedal assist bike-new trend?

What? Really??

The only thing I'd want to do with an E-assist bike is ride it up steep, long fireroads, just so I could rip some sweet trails down. But again, if you read my post above, that defeats the whole idea of "mountain biking" to me & the bike probably handles like shit, hence why I'm against it.

Are you implying that you would ride an E-assist bike UPHILL on a flow/jump trail that's designed to go down??? (e.g. Unemployment Line @ Galbraith in Bellingham, WA)

If so, LOL. I have nothing left to contribute to this thread.
That Lapierre bike looks good with normal tires, not overly heavy, I suppose since it doesnt use Plus Size Tires, PST .

As they said, the focus is on lowering overall bike- weight. 400W battery takes 100miles on eco. Thats more more than I thought. Thats 160km?! Who knows what next technology of battery can bring on? Undoubtedly, we going see e-bikes more as e-cars and e-MC going influence the overall market.

Funny that some people bring up motorcycles or a motorized device. It is a bicycle with mtb tires, fork, just add a little motor to power up, nothing fancy as throttle or burning tire like a badass MC. Even on 30% extra boost, you won't damage the environment or scare other poor cyclists away.

A bicycle with little motor is interesting because I could use it as self-shuttling. Imagine a big mountain to take the bike there on the top. Feeling fresh on the top of mt and you start descending. Descend many times as you can for a day, is not that dh-riders look for? I bought enduro bike for that.

A e-powered DH bike is even better, I skip paying shuttling whether chair, truck, van which is expensive as well. Trail centres dont bother me, because I'd not come there at first place. A lot of untouched mountains crave for attention! :D

Would not buy, but i could totally huck all things on that.
Gotta be 55 lbs tho, so hopefully you can blip that throttle off the lip.

Is this the first e-DH bike with quality-ish spec and geo?

Yes everything!

Electricity for cars ,motos, bicycles! FTW!

You won't believe what i saw in a normal German city, even its suburbs. Germans are fetisch over new tech, for sure!

:p

who knows.. Voulouiz is tech-savy man, after all.

I bet that we gonna use that kind of bike within 10 years when the weight of electronics drops to a half or less. Someone will say "that is the best thing happened mtb after dropper seatpost"

Enduro is not cool because.. well it is trail bike, not downhill. Downhill e-bike is not cool because... well it is e-bike, not a real and pure machine. Dropper seatpost is cool because everyone uses it...

No logics behind all them, of course. Both bikes help to achieve the destination with much less energy without a shuttle, car (my main point here).

In hell. Welcome!
Yeah, e-bikes will lead a revolution. Here in the US, they will make every bike licensed with plates et al, quite possibly with mandatory insurance as well. Your plates will determine where you are allowed to ride.

i would hate plates and insurance, for that reason i never owned any car, motorcycle.

What I've seen, below 250W motor and the limit 25km/h, then it's classified as any normal bicycle we have.

Quote from Wiki

European Union definition

European Union directive 2002/24/EC exempts vehicles with the following definition from type approval: "Cycles with pedal assistance which are equipped with an auxiliary electric motor having a maximum continuous rated power of 0.25 kW, of which the output is progressively reduced and finally cut off as the vehicle reaches a speed of 25 km/h (16 mph) or if the cyclist stops pedaling.” This is the de facto definition of an electrically assisted pedal cycle in the EU. As with all EU directives, individual member countries of the EU are left to implement the requirements in national legislation.

European product safety standard EN 15194 was published in 2009. The aim of EN 15194 is "to provide a standard for the assessment of electrically powered cycles of a type which are excluded from type approval by Directive 2002/24/EC".

So...instead of that carbon S-works that got ridden twice by a dentist and put up for sale, it will now be an e-bike?

I seriously doubt they will sell many of them. People that genuinely enjoy mountain biking won't buy them. I know I won't.

If this technology brings MTB fun to more people who can't physically pedal (not because they're fat and out of shape) I'm all for this. This will also have a huge application for DH without lifts, for us old guys who rode DH on 48-55 lb rigs 15 years ago the weight won't be as bad as for all you young guys who know 30-35lb DH rigs these days;) Heck my trail bike from 2000-2005 was 38lbs:dead:

Mountains can start running lifts on weekends only but still be open at a lower operational cost during the week. Innovation is all good so long as the application of it makes sense. These do not belong on the XC or Enduro race circuit.

Sorry to shoot holes in you trying to act righteous using a technicality, but but pedal-assist bicycles don't apply to someone that can't pedal...

There's a difference between pedal assist bikes that require pedaling and what he is riding, which is basically an electric motorcycle. Personally, I have no problem with people that require something like that. If something ever happened to me, I wouldn't want to stop doing things I enjoy. I have followed Ashton for a long time and he was/is a fantastic rider. I couldn't imagine that happening to me, nevermind someone that lived their life and made their living through bicycles. More power to him. He's a strong individual.

Let's be honest, these bikes are so not designed for people with disabilities. That's the same excuse/back-up-marketing-plan that Segway used also.

Personally, I'm more into biological solutions rather then mechanical crutches. In other words, just make EPO, HGH and 'roids more affordable and with a decent users manual (i.e. not IKEA "directions")...I'm sure we can make special enduro fanny sacks to hold an assortment of needles and creams. Have to keep getting bigger flat billed hats (and maybe fake testicles), but its better than relying on a ghey robot bike to help get you to the top.

We are making the same point, for some reason you're getting uppity about it. You know you're being pedantic, as it's the same technology being used.

I'm pointing out, that the technology, has it's time and place...I've made that point previously in this thread, just used this video as exhibit A, which is clearly a polar example, but applies to those who are more abled as well, though not fully able.

If I am ever suffering up a climb, and somebody passes me on one those bikes smiling, the following video sums up what I will do next:
Wouldn't you have to catch them first? Might be hard if you were already suffering.

If you had an e-bike on the other hand...

yeah since moped = motorcycle, a PEDAL assist bicycle = electric moto. I'm sure alta motors would agree with your assement. Pedantic he was not, words actually have meaning, strange how that works.

Word!

Funny some people have tendency to say illogical things when it's better leave it alone.

Cycling for disabled?

People are more "disabled" when they drive car, drive Segway, use public transport ..

Haha, you don't even follow the conversation :D

Let me spell it out... I'd use crayons to draw a picture for you, but this will have to suffice.

The opinions being expressed:

Assisted MTB = Good for those who are not as fortunate.
Assisted MTB = Bad for everything else.

The conversation is slightly more complex, but for you that has a limited capacity to form cohesive responses and relevant, on topic insight...this will suffice.

Lol!

Assisted? What is it?

If i drive car, I get some form of assistance.

Let's say if someone rides electric bike, is he automatically to be less fortunate? If someone drives e-car? If the bicycle is fully 100% compatible for healthy people, what is that?

That's child's logic for you!

I'm actually gobsmacked at your lack of understanding. Do you play dumb, do you not understand English, or are you literally lame in the head? Does our mutual dislike for one another immediately make you jump on your high horse, and not even bother to try understand what's written?

Did it not sink in, that I'm referring to those who have disabilities, as less fortunate and the fact that I think pedal assisted, or electric bikes are great for those people?

If you disagree with my sentiment, by all means disagree... but what the fuck are you going on about?

Either way, I really have had enough of you. Your idiocy has been amusing at times, but it's run its course for me. Welcome to my block list, enjoy your stay.

Crawl on hands and feet is purest form of self-transportation since you did after birth. If someone uses skateboard, its only for less "fortunate".

Why shouldnt I take electronic bike if its ONLY suited for a particular reason?

Tools are tools.

Suoerkrautcrow, nice to know you. Finally you did it!

Opinions on the Cube e-bikes being used by the EWS media guys?

Seems like a good idea to me, but it's a pretty rare usage.
