I get the urge to get a pair now and then but always stop for one reason or another.

The price is not crazy:

SCOTT 89X with insert for $99.99 plus S&H
http://www.sportrx.com/order.asp?product_id=SCT03
The No Sweat SCOTT goggle is $139.99plus S&H

My concerns are:
1- are the inserts prone to fogging as bad as glasses under the goggles?
2- Can you reuse the inserts? In new goggles, or have the local opti-shop refill the insert if the perscription changes?
3- If my goggles fog up I can't take them off and continue riding....as I would be all fuzzy. In a can't see kind of way....not a I drank a fifth of whiskey kind of fuzzy. :)

This place has just inserts for $99.99 and up for smiths.

go contacts :thumb:
Reason #1 why I don't go do Laser.......eyes still changing.

Reason #2 why I don't go Laser........I have this thing with anything in my eye. Freak out city. :o: :) I can't put contacts in....I jsut can't. I can't touch my eye ball and search around when I missplace the freaking things.

I would love to not be a wuss but I can't stand the thought of being awake when they cut into my eye with a laser. :stosh: Though I am sure I would be OK with it after. Last thing I need is to jerk around when a laser is slicing my eyeball. *puke*

not all people can wear contacts. I for example have an RX that simply cannot be made into contacts.

I also can't get the damn things in my eyes, as my eyelids are to strong to hold open, and my eyes react badly to being poked.

Apparently those smith ones are pretty damn good, but i just wore glasses under warpstars and that worked ok.

This year I am going to wear Oakley Race Jakckets and forego goggles all together.

See? Even the severely visually impaired can sport proper bike fashion!

Kawasaki green goggles are VERY chic. Personally, I prefer the black helmet/white goggles stormtrooper look, but green is super-dope.

another thing about laser eye surgery is that halos at night are apparently a known and semi-expected side effect. something about the altered area not being large enough when the iris is expanded to let in more light at night...?

here's a somewhat old discussion, change the "comments threshold" to +5 to filter out the noise: http://ask.slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=02/09/30/2031214&tid=156&tid=4

$200+ bolle prescription goggles were a waste for me. The insert is a pain in the arse to deal with, to keep clean, it basically doubles the surface that you have to worry about, dust will still make it's way in there, they fog up EASY, I would definitely never spend that money again. Regular 30-50 OTG goggles work better IMO...

I read that same slashdot discussion a while back toshi, sounds like laser surgery is too risky for me to seriously consider at this point. I am legally blind in my right eye from a torn retina and the resulting macular degeneration (not correctable). I have terrible vision in my left eye, so glasses are now a must for riding. I wear Zeal prescription sunglasses with a very light colored lense and they work great. Sometimes I have trouble with them fogging up, but all glasses are prone to that. I got them for under $200, so they are a great deal. www.zealoptics.com

..... why I don't go do Laser.......
Rhino,

I've worn glasses since I was like 6 years old, 29 years. My range of vision without them was about 18 inches, beyond that I was as good as blind. Almost all of my activities involve wearing a helmet and/or safety glasses/goggles. Biking, snowmobiling, lately track driving with my car. Wearing glasses has always been a burden to me, as I'm sure you can relate.

18 days ago I had LASIK surgery. I cannot think of a more worthwhile, gratifying thing that I've ever done for myself.

I was as freaked out about the whole idea as anyone. In fact, this was actually the third time that I started the process, chickening out the previous two times over about a year and a half.

If you are afraid of moving your eye and blinding yourself, I was too. They have that covered. The laser that was used on me uses a tracking system, it maps like a dozen points on your eye and knows if your eye moves even the slightest amount and compensates for it. Was I scared anyway? You bet. One girl I know asked her Dr. to give her a valium to clam her nerves, she was just unable to deal with her anxiety about having a proceedure on her eyes, but wanted to rid herself of glasses more than anything. So did I.

My g/f went to watch and she said that as soon as they hooked the actual cutting device to my eye my entire body tensed up (no valuim for me) where she could see every muscle and vein in my arms and legs. I was nervous! I had to remind myself to breathe, but I never let off the death-grip I had on the arms of the chair until it was done. I was scared. You would be nuts to NOT be scared, this is your vision we're talking about.

BUT ...

After less than 10 minutes time I was able to see without glasses for the first time in almost 30 years. Immediately. Each and every day since then my vision has seemed to improve as the healing process continues. I do experience some "halo" effect on lights at a distance at night, but that too lessens as time goes on and of the 6 friends that have had LASIK before me, all of them experienced it to one degree or another and none of then have any residual side-effects like that anymore. I expect the same result. People heal at different rates.

I now have 20/15 vision and it grows sharper every day. It obviously isn't for everybody, but if you are a good candidate you really should re-consider.
It's changed my life and I have found myself going out of my way to tell this story to everybody I know (or not even) and encourage then to look into it as an alternative to wearing glasses. Let me know if you'd like any other info that I might be able to give you.

How are your eyes still changing? I thought they were all done at around 18-20? I might put some Flexible Spending money away next year for LASIK. It would be awesome to have better than 20/20 all the time w/o glasses. It also be nice not to have to worry about breaking $300 glasses when you're getting tore up at a party! :)

I thought about Rx sunglasses/goggles, but decided to put the money away towards LASIK instead.

And by the way, they've been putting small fans in paintball goggles for years and it seems to work!

Wow! Thanks Nick.

Definately encouraging words.....some day. I have only had glasses the last 4 years or so....I probablyshould have had them half way thru college.

My mother had the proceedure done to her eyes back in the early to mid 80's and it was done with a scapel and a steady hand. *puke* She only on occasion needs reading glasses and it has been 20 years.

I am such a wuss..... Valium....hmmmmm :D

So what are the international price comparisons for laser eye coorection? F*** overpriced US medical services. Whistler + LASIK, NZ + LASIK, Cuba....a combo medico-bike trip, yeah! How much?

NZ? Korea? Oz?

In the US I've seen it advertised for $600 per eyeball.
