Actually, fat chainring. What is the point of an over build chainring when it's sandwiched between aluminum plates? GRC, Raceface, FSR, they all make real thick chainrings. Why do i want one, just cause it's thick and strong?

if your dhilling thats an easy answer. you want every thing to be big and bad ass looking. weight watching is for xc riders and the freeriders who hate to push there bikes.

sorry, i forgot. I am only talking about freeride and DH. I also am trying to save weight and cash. a cheap ring is $5, DH right is 40. weight is also a big factor. i'm putting together next years race bikeand i would like to keep it light. What am i loosing, or what am i gaining?

Actually, I think you have it the other way around. If you race DH, you want a light bike. On the other hand, if you huck your meat and throw down jibtastic manuvers, you gots ta represent with a heavy bike.

I really wouldn't worry about running a DH ring. Thats what a bashguard is for. Stick with regular rings. If you hit something hard enough to bend a ring through your bashguard it probably wouldn't matter what kind of ring it was.

WTF? "big and bad ass looking"?

If you're running a thick bashguard, you don't need a big thick DH ring.

If you're running a thinner (MRP, for instance) bashguard, you might want a thicker chainring in case you whack it.

That's all there is to it.
