If shooting in Manual mode with a digi camera - for portrait like photos or still life shots what ISO should I try?

What about for riding photos - what ISO for those types of shots??

Thanks!

for riding pictures, you want a fast enough shutter speed to freeze action, or you can 'pan' to freeze the subject as well (moving the camera w/ the subject as you press the shutter). for panning, a shutter speed of 1/30 or 1/60 should work pretty well. if you are not panning, i would try for at least 1/125 or so.

for still lifes, yr best bet is to get a cheap tripod, so you can use the lowest ISO possible. when using manual mode, it's key (and you may already know this, so apologies if this sounds condescending) to understand the 3 legged relationship between ISO, shutter speed, and aperture.

this is an interesting tidbit:

Just like other PowerShot's (and many other digital cameras) the A70 is limited by the fact that it uses a single iris mechanism for both aperture and shutter. The iris opens at the beginning of the exposure to a certain size for the selected (or metered) aperture and then closes again at the end of the exposure. The speed at which the iris can go from a wide aperture to completely closed creates a limitation as to the maximum shutter speed available at different apertures.

Thanks for those links.

I should just try and experiment a bit more with it and maybe actually do some reading on how to use the damned thing.

this morning I had to give it a good whack on the side for the thing to even display an image! LOL
