I can't seem to use the crop tool, it's always greyed out so I can't click on it. Any ideas?

Can you use Crop under the 'Image' menu? (after you select an area)

If the Background layer is locked, some tools won't work. Double-click the Background name in the Layer palette, then name it anything (the default is Layer 0. Once you do that, most of your grayed out tools will become available.
