Finally got some cool pics from my bro for his website. I know just enough in PS to not know anything, so I'm looking for ideas for some ways to use the different filters on these images for a more graphic look - just an idea I have. So far, I just changed the photos to b/w from color, I'm open to anything that looks cool and would add something to his site. I have PS 6 with no additional plugins.

the images are not small, I haven't reduced them for the web yet. And, yes I still have the originals.

I was playing with some of the sketch type filters - pen and ink, charcoal, that sort of thing but I couldn't get something I was satisfied with. (not sure what that would be, just didn't wow myself) I'm just thinking that someone that actually knows what they are doing could do better than me and give me some ideas on what to do with these. I am certainly open to "whatever"...:clapping: I just think the hand studies are so interesting, that they would be a great addition to his site.
So have at it, I'm not picky. I do have color versions of the files too, if that might work better. Ultimately, I was thinking that maybe somehow the images might be morphed into something suitable for a suite of images. But I don't know what I'm doing.

add a moderate amount of film grain and some canvas texture for this effect.....

i added the film grain first then the texture second...just play with the amounts and see whats good for you.....

here is another idea....of course you would want to spend more time on it but you get the idea....

i didnt select the area at all....i brought up the color file then made a duplicate layer....i destaurated that duplicate layer then started erasing it whereever i wanted the original color photo show through...then i added some gaussian blur to the desaturated layer....there sint any selecting i nthat just using the eraser.

Wow, thanks for the little lesson. I dug out my really crappy how-to book, and figured out how to do just that, tried it on a different one. Thanks for the little lesson.

hey geargrrl...sorry for pipin in too late

if you have any photoshop questions, feel free to PM me. :cupidarrow: but it looks like you got things pretty set. I have some edge filters if you're interested in taking those photos "out of the box" so to speak. They add a nice touch. I'll see what i can do with one of the photos tomorrow and post it so you can see.

nice job B on the sax photo

best way to do this is to do a "layer mask" but what you did looks good, you just cant go back once you cut it out, where as with a layer mask you can always bring it back!

in complete agreement...but if geargrrl is new to photoshop than trying to teach how masks work would be difficult online. dontcha think?

well of course but you could always just delete the layer or save it in psd document and have all the layers as well...no big deal. i have seen a lot of non-destructive techniques and they all seem like layer competitions to me. as long as you just copy the original you can just delete the layer if ya want to start over and no harm done.

of course once you get layer management down pat you can mask everything and call it good.

good point! there are many ways to accomplish tasks on PS! also good point by Graphics! but I will tell you that some of the best tutorials I have seen are online at www.photoshopcafe.com
or at www.pslover.com

I use some of the tutorials on photoshopcafe in my middle level graphics classes.

That looks cool. It might look better with some kind of frame.

Right click on the layer and click blending options (if you don
t already know). Try some contour/bevel stuff and maybe stroke.
