I can't seem to find the other thread that refered to this thing and i figured it may need a new thread anyway.

Shocking news - Progressive showed this rear shock with the label 'Freeriders Rejoice!', so they're obviously confident about the performance of this new, longer air shock. Their custom longer travel, bigger volume shocks will be seen on Specialized's 6in Enduro next year too. Over at Cane Creek, meanwhile, they've teamed up with legendary motorbike shock makers, Ohlins, who just happen to live just down the road, to make this new coil-over DH shock that's an exact, scaled down version of their motocross shock.

the canecreek reps at interbike said it wouldn't be available until the spring, and would be $750-$800!

that price range sounds very sensible considering its essentially an Öhlins. they never come cheap. then again great swedish engineering never do! ;)

Fascinating...... the gf's Gemini needs a coil over shock, it looks sweet, and I too have heard good things about Cane Creek's air shock offerings, it would be fun to have something different, too.

Any platforming then? I guess not if it's moto stylee..... That's actually better for DH, and the Gemini sees a lot of Whistler after all.

I like those adjustment knobs, looks like I'll have to carry some box wrenches or screw drivers now...

why is it so hard to just make it so you can turn them with your bare hands?

I think Ava is the only shock i've seen with Knob type adjustment like you describe that I haven't seen leak from them, and even Craig only uses this for one adjustment.

I am going to have to disagree on that one. NONE of todays top of the line shocks are that expensive: DHX, 5th, Avalanche, all of them are cheaper. Avalanche is made by a smaller company, includes custom tuning and runs $550. So, unless Ohlins includes some custom options and a ti spring, count me out.

Seems a little much for a mountainbike shock.
That comparison sucks. I can get a full set of adjustable shocks for my truck for $400. They are both shocks but it is still apples to oranges.

We are talking OHLINS shocks not Ranchos or any other automotive shocks.

Hook me up with a fully adjustable set of OHLINS shocks for my truck for $400.00 and I'll consider your argument valid.

The rep told me that the price included the ti spring, which is valued at $200 or so,which takes it down to $5-600 when comparing to other shocks.
Also it has hi/lo compression AND hi/lo rebound, which has never been used before in our sport.
They said it has some new damping system that is only used in F1 or something? He implied that we are getting some stuff that is somehow leapgrogging over auto industry and motorsports directly to mountainbikes?!?!?!?!
Yeah... i'll believe that when it's mounted to my bike ,not a second before.
PS on a shock that has limited space there is really not room for a hand adjuster-especially one that had a High speed knob around the low speed one, since they are on the resivoir. Not to defend them, but if it is some major advantage then it's worth it.
Congrats to another moto inspired shock, since i have yet to be satisfied with all the platform bike crap that's around right now. I think my Push is still my fave, but that's another story.

I'm still oogling over my DHX from all the fun I had in flag this weekend. It has knobs that are easily accessed and used with bare hands.

Come to think of it, fox has always been this way.

Except for the big blue one that the manual tells you to adjust by sticking a 4mm allen into the ring of holes. You must have super powers to turn yours by hand.....

you're kidding right?

The big blue thing on the end of the resivior is what you turn.

I do have super powers because my turns just fine, like it was designed to.

The manual says that if it gets jammed from dirt, to do the allen wrench thing, but mine is fine.

mine has some resistance too. With full access its no problem by hand, but mounted without space for a good grip it is pretty tight, but still managable.

then again, i'm pretty manly too :D

I think you missunderstood my point. Öhlins is very expensive in general. I never said they were cheaper nor more expensive than other shocks out there.

Id never spend $800 on a rear shock either. But it wouldve been nice having swedish technology on a mtb, both front and back. But in original Öhlins look, and not the black Cane Creek package.

Considering Öhlins reputation, im amazed they have ignored the mtb business in general (not counting a few custom valved shocks for Finnpeaks and Cyclepro bikes). If they put their mind to it, they could make killer stuff based on their MX range. But maybe the mtb industry is too small for them.

I didn't misunderstand; I disagreed. An $800 price is not "sensible", Ohlins or not. That is more than any other shock I know of. Based on that fact alone and the quality and options of some other offerings, I do not consider 800 bucks to be sensible.

The same resistance like a stock AVY feels like or more. Cause I noticed the same thing when I bought my first one and replaced a Fox RC. I thought something was wrong with the AVY... until I had about 5miles on it and realized what I had been missing all my life. :D

Those whining about price, last I checked an Avy was at least $750 with Ti spring and $775 for the new resi model.

Quality ain't cheap, but i'm not sure that new Ohlins falls into that catagory. Lets see some miles on it first! Anyone care to donate a 9x3.5?

They didn't. They were one of the early players in MTB shocks, under the name Noleen. Later partnered with Proflex and later K2... I'm not sure if K2 bought out the rights to the name, or if Ohlins continued to play a part right up until K2 shut down their bike line...

Hopefully they got it right this time around. For $800 they had better.
