Does anyone know of a company that makes a rack for your pickup bed to load the bike whole? I made one a few years back and it is falling apart. I was thinking that a front end bus rack mounted to some structure would be awesome. What does everyone else use?

I read the PVC pipe rack write up but that is just not going to cut it.

How strong is the PVC rack? I might try the 4 bike one this week. Is it pretty flexy? If it works I might have the local welding shop make me one if its to flexy

i use ratcheting tie-downs in my silverado and they work great, ive fit up to 8 bikes in the back before with no issues. The tie downs are cheap and always have worked better than racks friends have made

Well you need that extra durability when you're driving downtown  :blah: My 1/2 ton is plenty right now, my last truck was a 3/4-1 ton Silverado, my Z-71 is perfect to take my bike to Tahoe and haul stuff up to the snow.

Hey the PVC one's not flexy at all, it snuggly fits my tire and surprisingly has very little flex (id figure it was a lot of flex coming from the bars. If you want, you could put wooden dowls or metal bars inside the pipes for extra strength but i dont see why you would really need it. Still need to tie-down the bike. That design has perfect clearance for a 8 inch rotor with a 26 inch tire when pushed in the whole way. I dont know how the sun's going to affect it, but i dont see it shattering anytime soon.

If you want something nice, i saw a dude with bars mounted on his truckbed, and then he bought those yakama bike holder things that were designed for the top of the cars. Those are ~100 per, so I could see that getting expensive quick, but it looked great.

Does anyone have designs for a wooden one. The PVC version doesn't look like it would hold the bikes securely enough for rough roads. Maybe I'm wrong. I have always used the tiedowns, but it takes a long time to load 5 bikes. I wasn't in the mood to do that yesterday in the rain.

I've been using the PVC version for about 4 years now on some pretty rough roads on a regular basis. It holds the bikes just fine, flex is not an issue. They break after about 2 years of hard use. Not too bad for $16.

I welded one up using 1" square steel tubing. It holds four DH bikes in my Ranger with the front wheels off the bed so you can stow stuff under there. Three riders sitting on the tailgate, one in the passenger seat and a driver = shuttle mania.
